Overview of the site

  • Family-run Yorkshire Dales site nine miles from Malham Cove
  • Pop-up near to Grassington and 10 minutes' drive from Skipton
  • Walks from the site; pub next door; farm shop and café across the road
With a spectacular setting nine miles from Malham Cove and tucked under Cracoe Fell, Jean’s Field is set up for Yorkshire Dales wild camping for families, friends and their dogs. Hiking Malham Cove (25 minutes' drive) is, of course, a must for many when they come to the Yorkshire Dales, and very handily at this site, you'll get to relax after any busy days out at the excellent 16th-century pub next door or the café across the road. For walks, take the Rylstone Cross Loop directly from your pitch. If you’re looking for ideas for more walks or day trips, site owner Andrew is the man to ask. For cyclists, there's easy access to the Way of the Roses cycle path too, and the site is on the Tour de Yorkshire route. If you’re into your climbing, this is also a terrific spot for you, as you can get into practice at Cracoe Memorial Boulders (five minutes’ walk) before tackling Rylstone Cross (five minutes’ drive) or the challenge that is Kilnsey Crag (10 minutes). And you’ll certainly never starve. The camping field is on the edge of the pretty village of Cracoe. You can pick up supplies from the farm shop across the road, which also doubles as a tearoom and garden centre. If you’re seriously into good food, there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant in Hetton village (five minutes). Now, about those spacious pitches. Each one is clearly marked with a flagstone – please put your barbecues on top of this to stop the grass getting damaged. As this is almost-wild camping, basic facilities stretch to portable toilets, and there is no electricity, so remember to pack a torch to prevent any night-time mishaps. Getting to Jean’s Field is easy, by the way; it’s just off the B6265 Skipton to Grassington road, so no narrow, twisty lanes to navigate for you – but peace reigns supreme in the camping field as it’s set well away from any traffic noise.

Liked: Chose this site for it's location, and it didn't disappoint. A good base for exploring the dales. I liked everything but the weather!

Disliked: The toilets and shower are a little low-key, but they are kept clean and well maintained.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely adored our time here. Location serves as an excellent hub to explore both the immediate area and the rest of the Dales. Site is small and meticulously well kept, although it is served by portaloos don't be put off as they are kept spotless, the pitches are well marked out and generously sized. We are essentially 'glampers' and have a pretty big set up. We fit our large tent and porch, a windbreak and our car into the pitch with ease. The field is flat, grass is well looked after and the flag under fire pit rule means it is free of unsightly burn patches. The shower tent is a useful and easy to use extra and something that you rarely find on small pop up sites like this one. Andrew is a very attentive host and was there multiple times a day. The site is overlooked by quaint cottages so feels nice and secure. Andrew was very good with his knowledge of the area for walking and things to do, and I promise when we return I will be buying a map from you! Dog loved the site too, and it's location was ideal for popping into Malham, Grassington and Skipton and the local walks are to die for. I highly recommend the farm shop and cafe situated just over the road for a lovely breakfast. I will most definitely be returning in the future. The site is busy on the weekends which is understandable and then becomes considerably quieter on weekdays so I would tailor your stay based on that if you have preferences. The price is really a steal compared to a lot I found in the area especially considering I booked at short notice. Many thanks for having us and we will be back next season.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Just back from 3 days camping at Jean's Field Campsite and what a lovely, peaceful place. Nestled in the village of Cracoe, it's ideally situated for exploring Grassington, Burnsall, Linton etc. We are a family of 3 who enjoy camping in peaceful, basic sites where we're allowed to use our fire pit (and meet other camper's dogs ... sometimes their owners too) between hiking and exploring in our car. This quiet site is ideal if you're like us. It has a fresh water tap (with drinking water) and some clean buckets available (so you can fill them and wash yourself/ brush your teeth etc.) A tent shower (we didn't use it) and 2 portaloos that are the cleanest and most presentable portaloos I've ever seen. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The owner Andrew is the perfect host. Very friendly, helpful and full of brilliant local knowledge - should you need it? He recommended some really nice walks to us from the campsite, when I asked him. We also bought (as requested) our firewood, kindling (and some newspaper) for our fire pit from him and it was more than enough for 2 nights (he asked the following day if we had enough kindling/ paper still and would have happily given it to us for free, but no need as we had plenty). The pitch sizes are great! We felt nicely spaced out. Also, within a 15 minute drive there is a lovely Wetherspoons (The Devonshire) in Skipton and also a McDonalds, Greggs etc. so we didn't even bother cooking for ourselves. We will 100% be back to stay again for 3 simple reasons. Perfect, peaceful site, ideal location for exploring and it's lovely owner: Andrew. Thanks for such a great mini-break. 😁

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very quiet site tucked away from the main road. Quiet walk to back entrance of local pub ( down the lane through a small gate into the back of the car park 👌) Owner was friendly and made sure the other campers kept quiet when it got busy on the Saturday night! Within 10-15 minute drive from lots of great spots ( Grassington, Linton, Burnsall, Appletreewick, Skipton) - portaloos kept very clean throughout stay

Disliked: Shower not really an option but we took the kids to local leisure centre for a swim ( Craven Leisure centre in Skipton which also has a brilliant playground for all ages!) and had hot showers afterwards

From the manager: Thanks Joseph, glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. Welcome back anytime.

Local attractions

You’re bound to end up in Skipton (10 minutes’ drive) at some point. The “Gateway to The Dales” is famous for its medieval castle, its sprawling street market and independent shops. You can get a pint of Yorkshire ale in one of the many, many pubs – or how about a trip down the Leeds and Liverpool Canal on a narrow boat? Scenic Wharfedale is also on hand; Grassington (10 minutes) is better known these days as Darrowby in “All Creatures Great and Small”, and has a lively centre with lots of crafty-type shops and more pubs. Gorgeous Dales villages like Burnsall (10 minutes) and Appletreewick (15 minutes) are the starting points for walks along the Wharfe river, while Bolton Abbey (20 minutes) has plenty of scenic strolls among its handsome ruins. Further afield, a host of other adventures await. Literary fans can head for Haworth (40 minutes) for a tour of the rectory where the talented Brontë family lived – and for a big night out, you can catch a train from Skipton station (15 minutes) into Leeds (an hour) or Bradford (50 minutes).
