  • Spacious site in the Yorkshire Dales, a 10-minute drive from Skipton
  • Bolton Abbey Steam Railway 10 minutes’ drive; Ilkley 15 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; habitat lakes for wildlife; nearby walking trails
On the southern fringes of Yorkshire Dales National Park, Draughton Heights Campsite is a peaceful spot a 10-minute drive (or a one-hour stroll along an old Roman road) from the market town of Skipton. It attracts hiking enthusiasts, who have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing walking trails; however, its spacious grass pitches are also popular with families. Whether you’re here as a rambler or (especially) with kids, you should appreciate the well-maintained amenities block, a solid structure of Yorkshire stone with separate male and female toilets, showers (including for disabled guests) and baby-changing facilities. There is a small additional fee for canine guests, and they must be kept on a lead while on site so as not to spook the sheep in the nearby fields; however, you don’t have far to go to find dog-friendly walks around here. Try walking along the River Wharfe to Bolton Abbey, for example, or climb up Beamsley Beacon, from where you can take in expansive views of the surrounding moors. Three habitat lakes on site ensure a pretty constant stream of animal visitors, from deer to owls and other birds. Because the lakes are meant to encourage wildlife, swimming is not allowed – and please restrain your water-loving dog from jumping in. You’re welcome to fire up a barbecue; besides Skipton, where a market takes place four times a week (including Saturday), there are shops in Addingham and Silsden (10 minutes’ drive for either).

Liked: Excellent setting, with fantastic views. Brand new site and the owners are rightly proud of it. Showers toilets and communal kitchen are excellent. Little touches like shower gel are much appreciated. Water was lovely and hot too. Lots of space between pitches as well.

Disliked: Nothing. Perfect!

Liked: Brand new site and if they've started as they mean to go on they'll have plenty of happy campers. Some of the best facilities I've ever come across, the little touches like shower gel and shampoo in the shower, washing up liquid as well made all the difference, I was actually warm when I got out the shower which doesn't often happen when you're camping! Wonderful friendly, social able hosts who could not do enough for you and the location is idyllic if you need to escape as it's surround by the stunning Yorkshire Dales. Thanks again for you wonderful hospitality I'm sure my friends and I will be back!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: A very recently opened site that we had a lovely stay at. I am sure will not stay much of a secret for long and become increasingly popular over the summer. The owners were really welcoming and friendly, and you can tell that they have sunk a lot of time and hard work in to developing the site. The facilities are excellent with clean toilets and showers and piping hot water. There's even good WiFi despite being situated on top of the moors. The three lakes attract a wide range of wildlife which makes it even more attractive and the site is open and spacious to leave plenty of room between your nearest neighbours. Will definitely be back!

Liked: The owners are lovely and made sure everything was good for us. The site facilities were fantastic and the views were great.

Disliked: Not the fault of the owners but if you use google maps its takes you to a neighbouring farm as the track for the camp site doesn't show up yet.

Local attractions

Take a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Bolton Abbey station (10 minutes’ drive) is a recreated 1800s building with a vintage café where you can sample delicious homemade cakes. There is a lively calendar of events at the railway, including afternoon teas, murder mysteries and steam-driving experiences. An Augustinian priory established in the 12th century, Bolton Abbey (15 minutes) now sits in ruins on the River Wharfe, where a series of stepping stones allow you to cross the way workers at the priory used to cross. There is also a bridge for when it’s deemed unsafe to use the stones. The spa town of Ilkley (15 minutes) is overlooked by a vast area of wild moorland, just to the south, which includes features like the Cow and Calf Rocks and the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle. In town, there’s a playground in the Riverside Gardens and a child-friendly nature trail through the Darwin Gardens.
