  • Spacious site in the Yorkshire Dales, a 10-minute drive from Skipton
  • Bolton Abbey Steam Railway 10 minutes’ drive; Ilkley 15 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; habitat lakes for wildlife; nearby walking trails
On the southern fringes of Yorkshire Dales National Park, Draughton Heights Campsite is a peaceful spot a 10-minute drive (or a one-hour stroll along an old Roman road) from the market town of Skipton. It attracts hiking enthusiasts, who have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing walking trails; however, it's also popular with families. Whether you’re here as a rambler or (especially) with kids, you should appreciate the well-maintained amenities block, a solid structure of Yorkshire stone with separate male and female toilets, showers and baby-changing facilities. Just take note that due to the elevated position, the site can be windy. There is a small additional fee for canine guests, and they must be kept on a lead while on site so as not to spook the sheep in the nearby fields; however, you don’t have far to go to find dog-friendly walks around here. Try walking along the River Wharfe to Bolton Abbey, for example, or climb up Beamsley Beacon, from where you can take in expansive views of the surrounding moors. Three habitat lakes on site ensure a pretty constant stream of animal visitors, from deer to owls and other birds. Open lakes are on site if people want to enter at their own risk; life buoys are for emergency use only. You’re welcome to fire up a barbecue, but as a family site, quiet hours are from 10pm each night. In Skipton, a market takes place four times a week (including Saturday), and there are shops in Addingham and Silsden (10 minutes’ drive for either) for more supplies.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Lovely warm welcome upon arrival. Great site with fabulous views. You can pitch up anywhere you like, no restrictions.

3 lakes for swimming and a sauna onsite which can be booked online via a separate company.

Lovely wooded area for dog walks and the walk into Skipton was great, well signposted from the site.

Showers and toilets available, two outside sinks for cleaning, kitchen area with access to more sinks and a kettle, fridge and freezer. Sockets and usbs available for charging phones etc.

The site was fairly quiet which was ideal.
A few people had their dogs off leads but most kept them on leads.

Disliked Could do with a separate area for drying hair but ultimately you go camping so having access to a hairdryer etc is pure luxury. There was a hair dryer in the kitchen area but not ideal when people are in there making a cuppa etc.

1 bedroom camping pod

Liked The overall cleanliness is excellent and the well equiped pod is extremely convenient instead of having to set up camp with our tent which we have done for many years. Campsite clean and peaceful with areas to walk and space to play. Fantastic views, central to local amenities.

Disliked Nothing I can think of apart from a slug that had managed to sneak into the shower!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked If you’re looking for the perfect blend of tranquillity beauty and convenience this campsite is a hidden gem. From the moment you arrive there’s a sense of calm that wraps around you the only sounds are the live stock on the hills around you and the occasional splash from the wild swimming spot. What is a unique feature is that you just choose your pitch around the site no boundaries and if you don’t like it you simply move.

The views are nothing short of breathtaking. There’s rolling hills all around you only beaten by the spectacular sunset views. Walking routes start right from the site leading you through gorgeous countryside where you can completely lose track of time or head towards the nearest town for a lovely day out.

One of the highlights is the wild swimming facilities It’s the kind of experience that makes you feel alive, grounded, and miles away from everything.

What’s amazing is that although it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere total escape from the world you’re actually less than a 10minute drive from charming little towns full of independent shops cafés, and friendly locals or tourists attractions It’s the best of both worlds total seclusion without the inconvenience.

If you need somewhere to truly recharge connect with nature and enjoy stunning scenery without accessibility this place will capture your heart.

The owners deserve a special mention they are some of the friendliest host we’ve met (with the cutest dog Millie)Always on hand to help regularly checked in to make sure everything was perfect for our stay without ever being intrusive. You can feel how much they genuinely care about every guest’s experience.
The shower block is kept clean and has everything you need the kitchen area is a great little extra with its kettle and washer and freezer which on a site with no electric pitches comes in handy. WiFi was strong too.)
Quite a new site that is obviously going to go from strength to strength and we can’t wait to visit again to see how it’s progressing.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Draughton Heights Campsite was very well equipped. It made for a very comfortable stay.

The toilet and shower facilities were very clean. The communal kitchen had fridge freezers, washing machine and a tea/coffee station.

The campsite itself was cosy and beautiful. The three ponds were a delight. The fact that we could swim in them should we want to was a bonus! There were taps dotted around the campsite, so drinking water available everywhere. And the views from the campsite were breath-taking!

The owner was kind, warm and welcoming and he responded to our messages promptly in the run up to our arrival.

My husband and I have decided this campsite will be a regular spot for us going forward, and I think this place will be very hard to beat. We loved every second of our stay!

Local attractions

Take a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Bolton Abbey station (10 minutes’ drive) is a recreated 1800s building with a vintage café where you can sample delicious homemade cakes. There is a lively calendar of events at the railway, including afternoon teas, murder mysteries and steam-driving experiences. An Augustinian priory established in the 12th century, Bolton Abbey (15 minutes) now sits in ruins on the River Wharfe, where a series of stepping stones allow you to cross the way workers at the priory used to cross. There is also a bridge for when it’s deemed unsafe to use the stones. The spa town of Ilkley (15 minutes) is overlooked by a vast area of wild moorland, just to the south, which includes features like the Cow and Calf Rocks and the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle. In town, there’s a playground in the Riverside Gardens and a child-friendly nature trail through the Darwin Gardens.
