  • Scenic and well-maintained site less than a mile from Bolton Abbey
  • Skipton and Ilkley 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to Grassington
  • Coffee shop and kitchen on site; farm park and pub a short walk
A gorgeous Yorkshire Dales location, spectacular views, top-notch facilities and heaps to do nearby – it’s no wonder Catgill Farm has become a firm favourite with customers. And it’s also no wonder that it’s been named by a national newspaper as one of the country’s coolest campsites… The setting here is special indeed, on a family-run farm just under a mile from the town of Bolton Abbey. It’s the kind of place where you can craft exactly the kind of break you’d like, be that an active one filled with hikes and action-packed days out or a more leisurely one spent putting your feet up on site and then perhaps strolling over to the local pub. It’s also the kind of place where you won’t need to rely on your car all the time – set out on foot and you can reach Bolton Abbey in about 15 minutes for the famous 12th-century priory ruins, stepping stones across the River Wharfe and a sandy beach for paddling. Hesketh Farm Park is just across the road, or you could take a walk over the hill to Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. There are several places to eat within easy walking distance too, including a smart pub (10 minutes away across the fields) and an American diner that does excellent breakfasts, waffles and homemade ice cream. Not that you have to go that far for a feed – the site has its own coffee shop where you can set the day up well with a coffee and a croissant. Other facilities are just as excellent, including a high-quality bathroom block and a kitchen with washing-up area, charging points and three shared fridge-freezers. You’ll also be able to hire a firepit for a cosy campfire evening.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Toilets and washing up are very clean, with added use of fridges and freezer. Pitches with electric hook up were flat and we'll spaced out. Friendly greeting on arrival.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Great site! Location is lovely and the toilet / shower facilities are really good! Check in and check out all good. Taxis is £11 info Ilkley (uber)

Disliked: The site is on a hill so level pitches are challenging. We had a camper with elec hookup, but unfortunately it was on sand (which made levelling up tricker and created a bit of a mess in the van!)

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Facilities were very well maintained. Location was excellent with stunning views. You can tell a lot of thought had gone into the layout of the site, it's very pretty and well spaced out. The seating area with the games and the alpaca field were nice bonuses too. There are lots of little extras on offer such as fire pits, hot breakfast, fresh pizza and a well-stocked shop and though we didn't have need to try any of them this time we look forward to doing so next time...

Disliked: Site would benefit from another facilities block at the bottom of the hill, would make it more accessible. Our pitch was a bit difficult to walk on because of thistles but I don't think that could have been helped much and the WiFi signal didn't reach our pitch. Minor inconveniences at most.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: The views and things to do close by
The facilities including toilets and shower blocks , wash room , fridges and freezers if required, cats kitchen, pop up bar and able to rent fire pits .
The piece and quiet and respectful campers who adhere to the rules of quiet times . Second time I have been now and I will be back next may

Disliked: The road in can be testing but can be navigated if sensible and go slow. It's only 200yards where the road is narrow

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Beautiful campsite with excellent facilities. Lots to do around the campsite, we only used our car to go to the nearby coop.
The bathrooms were clean and even though the campsite was busy, we never had to wait to use the shower or toilet.
The coffees and pizzas were great and our daughter loved feeding the alpacas.
The fridges and freezers were really handy and the radio playing in the bathrooms and washing up area was a nice touch.
The tents were well spaced and we had lovely views!

Disliked: Our tent pitch was on quite a steep hill which made it difficult to move around inside- if we visited again I'd ask for one of the flatter pitches.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location, Lovely welcome, toilet and shower block, ability to use cafe (we didn’t)

Disliked: Being given a pitch right next to a young couple - this felt a shame considering the rest of the site was empty.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Beautiful location with some great hiking on the doorstep.
Showers and toilets very clean, friendly staff

Disliked: Insufficient showers for the number of people on the site. Very haphazard were tents without electric allowed to pitch. Some even pitching between the electric pitches greatly limiting the space available to set up properly. Not what I expected given the cost of the pitches. Also the pitch was on such a slope that there was no way of having a level bedroom area. Couldn't even place a drink on the floor without it falling over. No advance warning of this issue which was very disappointing.

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up with a few local walks, there are plenty more to tackle, including the long-distance Dales Way and routes around Malham (half an hour’s drive) including those to Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss. Several local villages and towns are good for a stroll too, including Skipton, where you can visit the castle and take a boat trip, or Ilkley, where you can follow up a walk to the Cow and Calf rocks with a dip in the river and a cake from Betty’s Tea Rooms. Both towns are about 15 minutes away. Addingham (10 minutes), Burnsall (15 minutes) and Grassington (half an hour) are other good options nearby.

If you need to entertain the kids, Hesketh Farm Park (five minutes’ walk) is the place to start, with tractor tours, a straw maze and animals to meet. They may also rather enjoy the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World (half an hour’s drive) or a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (five minutes), especially if it’s a day when Thomas the Tank Engine is in town.
