Bridge House Campsite: Grass tent pitches

General

  • Peaceful back-to-basics site opposite a pub in a quiet hamlet
  • Close to several walking routes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • 400 year old food pub opposite the site

Pizza, dales and cask ale... what a winning combo. Get stuck into the lot from peaceful and rural Bridge House Campsite in the Yorkshire Dales National Park: this lovely little place has its own pizzeria and is a few minutes' potter from the local pub and a fine menu of fine cask ales (and pub grub too, should you crave yet more after your pizza).

You may then care to burn some of that off. Sorted, as the site is in a popular place for Yorkshire Dales hikes, with several trails (including the Dales Way) accessible from local village Starbotton, and enough more nearby to burn off even a daily pizza and cask ale habit... Around the region, Skipton is half an hour's drive south and Harrogate within an hour to the north east. The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is 45 minutes away.

But back to that pizza. Bridge House is set around a 19th-century farmhouse, owned by generations of the same family since 1883; the most recent lot have – how sensible – turned the house's dining room has been turned into a pizzeria where pizzas, desserts and soft drinks are available to have in or take away on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. And the pub? It's the Fox and Hounds, a 400 year old inn conveniently set almost opposite the site.

Pitches at Bridge House are on grass and for tents, and amenities include a water tap, a flushing toilet and a portable shower in a shaded corner next to the camping field. The site is behind the pizzeria: look for the Cecilia's Pizzeria sign.

Great campsite with clean facilities and a friendly host.19/09/2021

Very cute village and surroundings, friendly host who ran the pizzeria on site and also sold us firewood and lent us a fire pit, the camping site itself was spacious and not too busy or crowded. The toilet was clean and flushed and toilet paper was provided. There was a shower (that we did not end up using) but it was functional and there was also space to wash dishes (with dish soap provided)

    Disliked:

Bugs, but it was fine with bug spray.

My 22 year old daughter and I camped here for 4 nights in late August 2021 with two tents that we were able to pitch next to each other.

The site's toilet and shower were clean and well maintained. The shower was hot and had great pressure.

Other than the natural sounds of the countryside, the site was completely quiet at night, ensuring a good night's sleep.

Cecillia was a friendly and welcoming site host and the pizzas from the small pizzeria she runs from the big house are fantastic!

This is a great wee campsite set in beautiful surroundings. Starbotton is lovely as is Kettlewell village which is only a few miles down the road.

I would thoroughly recommend this site. We are already making plans for a return visit next year.

Everything, great cosy little space. Fridge, kettle, extension lead. Real fire. Proper bathroom and toilet on site. Comfy beds. Safe parking. Very nice and polite owners of property. Got to watch the sheep being taken through the village and that was lovely. Dog friendly

    Disliked:

    Nothing to dislike,
Just a few pointers for fellow travellers,
Pub wasn’t open while we stayed. Only opens Wednesday- Sunday. Was looking forward to a pint and hot meal, just across the road after a long drive.
We put the beds together and took bedding for a double bed. Our sheet wasn’t big enough to cover both beds together. So make sure you take either 2 single sheets or a king size sheet.
No phone signal, service or any internet, which for us was lovely. As we came to get away from it all.

Area was lovely and scenic. Close to good walking and pub. Campsite was small and quiet while we were there, suspect it could get busier at weekends. Pleasant greeting from Cecilia and she called in once or twice to check we were ok. Only one loo and shower but always clean.

Local attractions

Local village Starbotton is a popular startoff point for Yorkshire Dales and Wharfdale hikes, as it's near the Dales Way, running for 80 miles from Ilkley in West Yorkshire to Bowness-on-Windermere in Cumbria. Energetic types could also tackle Buckden Pike (10 minutes' drive), a heady fell hike leading to the top of Wharfedale; the only higher peak in the area is Great Whernside (15 minutes), a paltry two metres taller.

There's loads more to see and do in the area by car, such as Kilnsey Park, (15 minutes), a farm park with fishing and kids' activities), or a look at the history and industry of the area at the Dales Countryside Museum (35 minutes) or grand old Bolton Abbey, 40 minutes away. If you're craving yet more Yorkshire cuisine, cheesy treats at Wensleydale Creamery are within 35 minutes' drive.

Further afield, have a peaceful ride on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, the spectacular 73-mile journey from Settle (50 minutes) to Carlisle via the Yorkshire Dales,  the North Pennines and the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; this one is a bit of a must.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (15.2 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey (20.4 miles)
  • Richmond Castle (21.0 miles)
