Dalesbridge: Spacious and green site

General

  • Spacious site between the Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland
  • Within half an hour of the Three Peaks, Malham Cove and Gisburn Forest
  • Lockable bike store and bike wash; fully-licensed bar

Got a bike? Get on it and pedal over to Dalesbridge, a cycle-friendly site between the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland.

Here on this roomy and tree-filled site a lockable bike store awaits for your valued two-wheeled vehicles, as well as a cycle wash area so you can hose the mud off after long days up hill and down dale. The site team is steeped in local knowledge too when it comes to Dales trails and Bowland bike paths and this peaceful setting is all about half an hour’s drive from the Gisburn Forest, where mountain bikers of all ages, fitness and nerve can pedal a route to suit.

Whether you’ve been making white-knuckle rides down the slopes, trying to bag the Three Peaks in 12 hours or settling down for the scenery on the Settle-Carlisle railway, you’ll have a quiet and welcoming base to come back to at Dalesbridge. There’s ample room, staff who are happy to help, and most importantly for mountain roamers returning with a thirst, a fully licensed bar (open at certain times).

If you’ve returned hungry as well, you’re welcome to barbecue bangers and everything else on site, and shops and supermarkets are 10 minutes’ drive away in Settle.

On arrival the reception was pleasant and the site looked lovely

    Disliked:

On arrival we were told where we could put up our tent we pulled up to a space , when a man came out of his tent (50 foot away) to say we couldn’t stay there as moor of his party were going to arrive (fair enough) but This was not told to us or the pitches marked up , we put our stuff back on to our motorcycle and begrudgingly found another pitch. Unfortunately our bike would not start. Which made my husband even more angry. We finally managed to set up camp only to have the receptionist come and say we could not stay on this pitch as it is an electric pitch ! We did look to see if we were near any electric points but could not see any, he pointed it out x 3 large tents away . To be fair the man said he would try to rearrange but we were very nearly ready to sit in front of our tent with a beer after setting up ! By this time we were more than angry so we ended up packing it all back up and came home !! So unfortunately I cannot write a positive report about the site as we did not stay.

Local attractions

The Three Peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent are all reachable within half an hour's drive of the site, so it's your choice whether you hoof it up them in a single day, or take your time, savouring views and devouring hard-earned picnics on top.

Starting 10 minutes away, the walk to Ingleton Falls is gentle but no less rewarding, and even though you’re heading deep down instead of up, the caverns and wild rock formations of Whitescar and Ingleborough caves make for unmissable wanders.

For walks with wildlife, make the half-hour trip to Malham Cove, where a pair of nesting peregrine falcons can be spotted in the summer months, alongside resident populations of jackdaws and housemartins. You can climb the massive amphitheatre cliffs of the cove, or follow trails up and around taking in the glacial Malham Tarn and Janet’s Foss waterfall.

To see some wildlife at closer quarters, the Settle Falconry Centre (five minutes' drive) has daily displays of flying and feeding and if you feel you’d like to soar through the skies, the Ribble Viaduct section of the Settle-Carlisle Railway makes a fair imitation.

If all this outdoor, high altitude stuff has made you peckish, head over to the Wensleydale Creamery (40 minutes) to learn how the famed crumbly cheese is made… and then sample some, but of course.

Must see

  • Lancaster Castle (18.2 miles)
  • Beacon Fell Country Park (19.5 miles)

  • Malham Tarn Estate (7.7 miles)
  • Sizergh Castle and Garden (20.6 miles)
