The three peaks

  • Family-run farm campsite on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales
  • Lake District National Park and Forest of Bowland 40 minutes’ drive
  • Luxury showers with underfloor heating; dog-friendly site
Not one national park, but two – with a National Landscape area thrown in for good measure. That’s what you get at Dales and Trails, a small, family-run and exclusive-use campsite on the edge of the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s also in pole position for excursions to the Lake District National Park or Forest of Bowland National Landscape (both around 40 minutes’ drive). Based on a working farm with views to the Three Peaks near Giggleswick (10 minutes), this rural site is also in a dark-skies area, so make sure you cosy up around the firepit on clear nights for the chance to watch the stars glittering across the heavens. Facilities here have been nicely thought out: guests have access to smart modern shower rooms with underfloor heating (bliss on a brisk Yorkshire day) and luscious toiletries provided. There are many scenic walks straight from the site, so dog owners, bring your pets too and exercise them among the untamed Dales scenery. Cyclists and bikers can relax, happy in the knowledge that there’s dry, secure storage for bicycles and motorbikes, and drivers can charge their electric vehicles too (for a small fee).

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Absolutely amazing little site with incredible views. Hosts here are absolutely amazing, very friendly and welcoming. Also possibly the best bathrooms we’ve ever had on a camp site.

Disliked: Nothing to really dislike here to be honest!

The Lodge 1 bedroom cabin

Liked: The cabin is lovely. It is clean, cozy and well equipped and exceeded our expectations. The owners are friendly and welcoming. The covered outdoor area is great for rainy days which we had.

Disliked: A family camping thinking they could use our kitchen and outdoor area. This felt really rude as she said she had been told she could! I politely said this was a cabin and not a shared space. After this they kept staring over as if we were lying to them! I feel the kitchen and bedroom window could do with frosted vinyl been added for privacy. Whilst washing the pots, campers could stare in whilst we used kitchen.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Unbelievable views, amazing friendly owners, bathrooms that would put hotels to shame. This campsite is a lovely little gem of a site nestled next to the lovely little village of Giggleswick, which itself is full of lovely friendly people. The owners made a point each night if coming round and having a chat and making sure everything was ok, genuinely some of the nicest people I’ve ever come across. The pitches are all super flat and the views are INCREDIBLE. Put on top of that the bathrooms that are nicer than most hotels I’ve stayed in. Just get it booked

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location is amazing, great views all around the campsite. The bathrooms are so nice, clean and the showers were nice and hot (with shampoo, shower gel and conditioner provided)! The hosts of the campsite were great and helped us with any questions and provided us a cable to charge our power banks from the electric hook up. The sunsets were amazing and the stars are so visible on a night.

Disliked: The washing up area was not covered and was quite low down. It made it difficult to use especially when it was raining. We would have liked a little more space between us and the neighbouring tents as it did get a little bit noisy at time. But we would still definitely recommend this site! We had a great stay!

The Lodge 1 bedroom cabin

Liked: We stayed in both the Lodge and a pitch site for our rooftent. Hosts Lauren & Charles were great. The Lodge was excellent. Very clean. Perfect for 4. The outdoor covered private space was amazing with plenty of room and seating with the views. Recommend enquiring about booking the Lodge and the whole field (around 8 pitches) with it if you have a large group. The showers (with loo in each of the 2) were exactly the same high quality (identical) as the Lodge one. Perfect location for walkers.

Disliked: Would be great if there was some flat grass space for kids to play. They managed to play on pitches between changeover, but appreciate the landscape doesn't currently add itself to this & it is also a working farm too.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Extremely well maintained site, friendly welcome and excellent toilet / shower facilities. Very nice views and great local walks.

Disliked: Only 2 showers / toilets on the whole site, struggled to use the showers in the morning due to a long wait. Site is more equipped for camping then motorhomes. Only water point to fill the van was at the owners house, we had to knock to ask for the water to be turned on, same hose pipe used for toilet cassette cleaning and to fill the van with fresh water, not very hygienic. Paid for a hard standing pitch with grass, got told to park on what appeared to be a roundabout. Cleaning spray in the showers would be nice so guests can clean between use.

Local attractions

The energetic among you will no doubt relish the challenge of hiking the Three Peaks (it’s 10 minutes’ drive to Ingleborough), or try climbing at Castleberg Rock (10 minutes) and fell running directly from the campsite. But there’s plenty of low-octane fun to be had too: have a potter around Malham Cove (25 minutes), or spot the stream trains chugging across sweeping Ribblehead Viaduct (25 minutes). Pretty Dales towns to explore include Hawes (40 minutes), where you can learn about local life in the Dales Countryside Museum and taste award-winning cheeses at Wensleydale Creamery. The market town of Giggleswick and its close neighbour Settle (10 minutes) are both packed with cosy old pubs, while in Skipton (half an hour), you can cruise the Leeds and Liverpool Canal on a day-hire barge. And talking of water, you can be cruising Lake Windermere in 50 minutes, fishing on Stocks Reservoir in the Forest of Bowland in 40 minutes, or following the circular trail to dramatic waterfalls at Ingleton (20 minutes).
