  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

What customers say

This is a well-regarded, spacious, and peaceful campsite in a stunning location, ideal for the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Visitors praise the clean facilities, hot showers, and friendly, helpful staff. The site is described as basic but well-maintained, offering plenty of room to pitch. Some note the proximity to the railway line, the lack of lights in some toilet blocks, and the single-track access road, but overall feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with many visitors expressing a desire to return.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location out of the way and quiet, no shops and pub was a walk away if wanted but far enough not to be a bother if you didn’t. Had to bring everything I needed with me as nearest shops half an hour away so needed to plan but that why I chose the site. Lovely hosts, basic site so don’t expect the world but provided everything I needed - clean, hot showers and mobile toilet block on each of the three fields so not too far to walk to.

Disliked Couldn’t find the water tap then realised two tents down had pitched right in front of it for their own convenience! Not helpful!!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely campsite in a great location with views of Pen y Ghent. A lovely little stream runs by the bottom of the field — a lovely sound to fall asleep to (along with the odd hooting owl!)

The facilities were basic, but honestly that's exactly what I expect (and want) from a campsite!

Overall, ideal site for a cheap weekend away in the Yorkshire Dales.

Liked Amazing place to stay, there is so much room you don’t feel like you’re on top of other campers. Plenty of facilities, around the site. The perfect place to just switch off and go for a little adventure.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Well kept campsite, beautiful natural landscape. Clean toilets and individual shower cubicles. Next to a river with easy access to nearby walks! 3 pubs within walking distance as well :) Smooth check in and lots of space. Budget friendly prices, within a short drive to Settle and Ingleton. We really enjoyed our stay here!

Disliked No lights in the toilets so make sure you bring a torch with you when you go!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Scenery, river location and ideal for train enthusiasts. No WiFi (that i was aware of) for those who want their kids off their mobile phones. Fuss free check-in. Facilities held up with a small swell in weekend campers. Great for those wanting a quiet get-away in the countryside.

Disliked Good data signal (for those who want their kids off their phones).
Facilities are somewhat basic, but clean enough. Only one warm water facility (showers) with sinks only having cold water. No boiler or freezer facility.

Disliked Poor instructions given by owner. Rude interaction with a man who did not identify himself. When sat around tent, with chairs and table set up, a man approached us in a vehicle to say ‘put your dog on a lead or leave’. If advertised as a dog friendly campsite it should mention you have to have your dogs staked even when in your own tent area. Also had a terrible experience in the local pub so if wanting a nice pub to walk to I would avoid.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
