  • CAMC members-only site 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Selby
  • Yorkshire Air Museum 20 minutes’ drive; York half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; across a field from Skipwith Common nature reserve
In the grounds of what has been a family home for a quarter of a century (and counting…), Aurora Leisure Certificated Location is a peaceful site run by keen motorhomers. They have converted the horse-riding area of their farm into a touring site for members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, so get your membership sorted and step this way to make the most of your stay in this corner of North Yorkshire. Each of Aurora Leisure’s five hardstanding pitches is adjacent to a grassy area (for relaxing afternoons spent doing very little, picnics and barbecue sessions; there’s also room for a three-metre awning). Each is also equipped with electric and water hook-up points, solar-powered lights and free internet access via Starlink. Your canine companion is welcome, and there’s a paid dog park with a nine-acre field and areas of woodland (plus agility equipment) a five-minute walk away. Dogs are also allowed in Skipwith Common, a nature reserve just across a field from the site. And the best part? At the northern end of the common, in the village of Skipwith (about 45 minutes on foot), is a traditional country pub for liquid (and solid) post-walkies refuelling. There’s another pub in the nearby village of North Duffield (five minutes’ drive), which also has a grocery store. For larger supermarkets, head to the market town of Selby (10 minutes), which has plenty of dining options, plus an indoor playground, a fishing lake and access to the Trans Pennine Trail.

Local attractions

The Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial (20 minutes’ drive) sits on the site of a World War II RAF base. Its hangars are home to more than a century of aircraft, from a replica of the plane flown by the Wright Brothers in 1903 to modern fighter jets. There’s also an aircraft-themed playground. In York (half an hour), take a stroll atop the city walls before heading to the spectacular Minster (where you should steel yourself for the 275-step climb up to the bell tower for views of the city and beyond). World-class museums include the National Railway Museum York (home of the Mallard steam locomotive) and the JORVIK Viking Centre. Looking like a shark with its jaws wide open, The Deep in Hull (55 minutes) is a splendid aquarium on the Humber Estuary. Marine residents here include rays, sharks and reef creatures, plus penguins, sea turtles and frogs.
