  • Quiet campsite in Irton village, 15 minutes’ drive from Scarborough
  • North Yorkshire Water Park 10 minutes’ drive; Filey 20 minutes
  • Adults-only site with basic facilities; pub five minutes’ drive
For a taster of bracing North Yorkshire air plus a dollop of peace and quiet, The Ranch has got you covered. This rural campsite is in the village of Irton, 15 minutes’ drive from Scarborough, and in pole position for adventures in the North Yorks Moors National Park, expeditions to sandy North Sea beaches and walks in the Yorkshire Wolds. Fishing, surfing, sunbathing and sea (or indoor pool) swimming are all available within 20 minutes’ drive, as are golf courses, riding schools and mountain-biking trails. There’s no shortage of pubs and restaurants either, with cosy traditional Yorkshire pubs and seafood dining options between five and 10 minutes away by car. Simple facilities at this adults-only spot include grass pitches, two drinking points and electric hook-ups. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on the lead as the site is based on a working equestrian yard, and your neighbours will be horses grazing in adjacent fields.

Liked Very quiet, small site. Great communication with the owner. Toilet/shower block nice and clean. Quite basic but just how we like it.

Disliked 2 x pubs in the village closed (not the camp sites fault).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Really relaxed and peaceful site. We don’t like the busy noise of the large family campsites so this was perfect for us. Close to Scarborough and heading off for beautiful walks in North Yorkshire or along the coast.

Toilet and shower were clean and the water was hot. An essential when camping on cold and wet days.

Liked It was perfect, basic but with a fridge kettle toaster microwave & heater which were fabulous. The views from the door were amazing, and it was so so quiet.facilities were clean and well stocked.

Disliked Loo’s are a bit far, it’s not a major issue.

Local attractions

So, where to start? You’ve got the North Yorkshire coastline close to hand, so perhaps a jaunt to Scarborough (15 minutes’ drive) is in order. You can visit the clifftop castle, discover the amusement arcades backing sandy beaches and watch the antics of sea lions or penguins at Sea Life Scarborough. For a quieter seaside experience and a dog-friendly shoreline, head for Filey (20 minutes). Turn inland for yomps across the heather in the North York Moors National Park (five minutes), spotting curlews and deer along your route. The undulating hills of the Yorkshire Wolds (half an hour) make for some challenging days on your bike, or you can pedal through pretty countryside to see the seabirds nesting at RSPB Bempton Cliffs (an hour and a half by bike). All that activity too much like hard work? Lovers of vintage steam trains may like to take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering (half an hour’s drive) and chug across the moors to Whitby (45 minutes). You can picnic on the farm at Woldies (25 minutes), as well as pick your own lavender if you hit harvest time in summer, or discover the colourful plantings on ambles around Helmsley Walled Garden (45 minutes).
