Caravans

  • Well-equipped family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Scarborough
  • Fishing lakes five minutes’ drive; North York Moors 20 minutes
  • Cycle hire; play area; launderette; licensed shop; dog-washing station
Don’t let the name mislead you: there is more to St Helens Caravan Park than… well, caravan pitches. Indeed, with several accommodation options, this site is definitely a contender for your next North Yorkshire family holiday. And if you’re looking for a romantic break, there’s also an adults-only area where you will be undisturbed by… er, over-enthusiastic children. (There’s also enforced quiet time after 10pm.) St Helens sits in the Vale of Pickering, between the Beedale Beck river and the A170, which takes you straight to Scarborough in about 15 minutes (by car). It’s a great location – of that, there’s little doubt. Are you into fishing? There’s top-class angling in the four freshwater lakes that make up the North Yorkshire Water Park Fisheries (five minutes’ drive). Maybe you prefer hiking? Besides easy woodland walks in the vicinity, you’re at the southern tip of North York Moors National Park here (20 minutes) and not far from Howardian Hills National Landscape (45 minutes). And if you fancy a day at the seaside, sandy Scarborough Beach (15 minutes) is a fine spot for a swim or an ice cream as you watch the tide come in. Back at the site after a day with the kids, no one would blame you for wanting some time to yourself, so leave the children to make new friends in the playground and take the dog for a nice walk. Muddy tracks? No problem: with a dog-washing station on site, your four-legged companion will look even fluffier and more handsome than when you first arrived. Other facilities on site include a café and a licensed shop, family-friendly bathrooms, a launderette and cycle hire.

What customers say

This is a consistently well-maintained and exceptionally clean campsite with friendly, helpful staff. Visitors praised the immaculate facilities, including the new shower blocks with underfloor heating and private rooms. The site offers well-laid-out pitches with amenities, a good cafe, shop, and a popular playground. Its convenient location for exploring the coast and the peaceful atmosphere were also highlighted. While most reviews were overwhelmingly positive, a few minor issues included some pods being basic, a lack of detachable shower hoses, and occasional café or shop opening hour limitations.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (adults only, large)

Liked Very clean toilets and showers. New shower block and facilities are excellent. Lovely landscaping and planting. Very nice cafe on site serving great choice of breakfasts. Excellent fully serviced pitch and adults only field.

Disliked That shop on site didn’t sell much, not even a loaf of bread or pint of milk. We had booked an adults only pitch but at the weekend groups of children were riding round our field on scooters and bikes making lots of noise.

Camping pod

Liked We loved our one night stay in a camping pod. We came over to Scarborough to see The Script at the open air theatre so only needed the one night however we will definitely be back for a longer weekend stay! Takes the hassle out of putting up a tent, the facilities are top notch, my partner enjoyed breakfast in the cafe before we headed off home. We were pretty sad to leave to be honest!

From the manager: Come back and see us again soon! We hope you had a brilliant time at The Script!

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (adults only, medium)

Liked Really clean, well maintained site. The grounds were really nice and the facilities were spotless. Ideal location for the places we wanted to visit in the area. Good size level pitch, although some others looked like they would have needed ramps. This is the first site we've used where we had to pay for electric but this only came to 40p over 3 days so very reasonable. Bonus points for the donkeys and lama near the entrance!!

Disliked Nothing really to dislike

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (adults only, medium)

Liked Stayed here for a week, communication with the site was great, staff on arrival and through out were extremely helpful. Had an all serviced pitch which was very good and generous size. Layout of site was perfect and facilities were immaculate, kept clean all the time. Lovely cafe on site also shop with good range of essentials. Very centrally situated for ease of getting to places and the convenience of a bus stop outside campsite entrance. Would definitely visit the site again and would recommend to others.

Danby camping pod (hot tub, three person)

Liked We stayed in the glamping pod with hot tub, ideal for us. Daughter loved the park. Lovely walks for the dog around the site. Excellent facilities, welcoming reception, shop, cafe, all were great - had pizzas one night and breakfast both mornings - lovely food and service. Quiet in the evenings which suited us too.

Disliked Nothing - already booked again!

Local attractions

At North Yorkshire Water Park (10 minutes’ drive or a 15-minute bike ride) the entire family can make a bit of a splash, either on the inflatable obstacle course or having a go at wakeboarding. There’s also paddleboarding, kayaking and open-water swimming, plus (for those who prefer solid earth to water) climbing and axe throwing. Scrambling up the headland that is home to Scarborough Castle gives you the chance to admire the town’s two beaches from up high: South Beach is lively and lined with shops and arcades, while North Beach tends to be less busy. At its northernmost end is the SEA LIFE Scarborough aquarium. Dotted with statues, follies and fountains, the gardens at Castle Howard (40 minutes) are quite spectacular. Swans and other birds inhabit the area around the lakes and waterways, and it is also possible to take a rowing boat for a trip around the Great Lake.
