  • Small site on a farm on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • Half an hour’s drive from Scarborough and 40 minutes from Whitby
  • Dogs welcome; easy access to hiking and biking trails in Dalby Forest
Fancy a spot of wild camping in a location that puts you within easy reach of windswept moors, North Sea beaches and forested walks? Then head to South Moor Farm, on a small livestock farm in the middle of Dalby Forest, a large wooded area on the southern edge of North York Moors National Park. With just a handful of pitches on well-maintained grass plots, this relaxed and rural spot comes with access to basic amenities, including a water tap, waste recycling and a disposal point for chemical waste (green chemicals only). There are two toilets and a shower on site, too. The pitches are in a paddock between the owners’ house and a barn, within easy cycling or walking distance of many local rights of way. A couple of pubs can be reached within about a 10-minute drive, and larger towns like Scarborough are half an hour away if you fancy a day at the beach or a night out – or if you need to stock up on essentials or camping equipment. Dogs are allowed at this family-friendly site, but please keep them on a lead at all times around the farm.

What customers say

South Moor Farm offers a peaceful, rural escape with stunning views, ideal for walkers and cyclists with direct access to Dalby Forest. Visitors consistently praise the warm welcome and helpfulness of the friendly owners, Bob and Christine, and their dogs. Facilities are described as basic but clean and functional, with a shower costing £1 for 5 minutes. While the remote location is a key draw, some found the narrow access roads challenging. Recent upgrades to toilet and shower facilities are ongoing, with many guests eager to return.

Liked Pitch quality and ambience. Loved the free-range dogs.

Disliked coins only shower - happy to pay, but it’s challenging to keep enough pound coins nowadays.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked The quiet isolation, yet right adjacent to Dalby Forest Drive for very easy access to the forest on Mountain Bike.
Also the toilet and shower facilities have recently underwent a renovation and hence are in good condition.
The owner obviously takes great of the field for the motorhomes and the grass is immaculate.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Quiet, peaceful site. Absolutely in the middle of nowhere. Farmyard animals nearby. The owner was friendly and helpful. Adequate free wi-fi available.
Great site for walkers and cyclists.

Disliked We had an issue with the gents toilet. The toilet was too close to the wall and I had to sit at an angle. We were also very surprised to discover that we had to pay £1 for 5 minutes shower.
We cut short our stay as the roads to the site were very narrow. Our van is 7'9"" wide and we brushed hedges both sides as we drove along.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Site is in Rural North Yorkshire many roads are narrow and some single track. Please read site description, the shower price is mentioned.

Local attractions

Start your exploration of Dalby Forest at the visitors’ centre (15 minutes’ drive), where you can get expert advice on the best hiking routes. If you’re into birdwatching, head to the Raptor Viewpoint, where valley views come with sightings of ospreys and sparrowhawks. At National Trust - Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping interesting rock formations date from the Jurassic Age. In Scarborough (half an hour), the 1930s Scarborough North Bay Railway, which goes through Northstead Manor Gardens and along the North Bay, is an effortless way to explore (some of) the town. Stop for an ice cream or fish and chips on either of the two sandy beaches, which are separated by a headland topped by the ruins of Scarborough Castle. Whitby (40 minutes) is renowned for its connection to Bram Stoker, who was inspired to create his character Dracula by the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, on a headland accessed via the 199 Steps. Across the River Esk, the Whalebone Arch overlooks the working harbour and is a great frame for a picture of the abbey.
