  • Small site on a farm on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • Half an hour’s drive from Scarborough and 40 minutes from Whitby
  • Dogs welcome; easy access to hiking and biking trails in Dalby Forest
Fancy a spot of wild camping in a location that puts you within easy reach of windswept moors, North Sea beaches and forested walks? Then head to South Moor Farm, on a small livestock farm in the middle of Dalby Forest, a large wooded area on the southern edge of North York Moors National Park. With just a handful of pitches on well-maintained grass plots, this relaxed and rural spot comes with access to basic amenities, including a water tap, waste recycling and a disposal point for chemical waste (green chemicals only). There are two toilets and a shower on site, too. The pitches are in a paddock between the owners’ house and a barn, within easy cycling or walking distance of many local rights of way. A couple of pubs can be reached within about a 10-minute drive, and larger towns like Scarborough are half an hour away if you fancy a day at the beach or a night out – or if you need to stock up on essentials or camping equipment. Dogs are allowed at this family-friendly site, but please keep them on a lead at all times around the farm.

What customers say

This is a peaceful, back-to-basics campsite on a working farm, ideal for those seeking tranquility and nature. Guests praise the beautiful setting, direct access to Dalby Forest for walking and cycling, and the friendly, accommodating owners and their dogs. Basic but clean facilities include coin-operated showers. Some noted the remote location means bringing supplies, and the grass pitches can be soft in wet weather. A highly recommended, value-for-money escape.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked This is by far one of the best sites we have stayed at! If your looking for all singing and dancing campsites look elsewhere and pay the price! If you want a back to basics peaceful working farm where from the second you arrive you are looked after and even introduced to the 2 dogs! Then you've found it! We had no issues getting here with our tourer caravn even following Google maps but instructions kindly emailed by owner. We booked electric grass pitch, a perfect spot wasn't hard to find! Single sex toilets/shower which again is back to basics, as stated operated by £1 for 5 mins! Being out on moors it's open to the elements BUT we had no issues as we just had a lovely hot weekend and the wind helped massively! Not to mention star gazing and storm watching! Our kids LOVED the dogs and regularly played around as we left ours at home because of the weather! Must admit it was nice to wake up to 'cick a doodle do' and listening to the cows. We as a family loved it here and will be returning every chance we get 20 mins into scarborough/40 to whitby! The owners are far more than accommodating and deserve recognition for their affordable family friendly basic camp site! Thank you so much for a lovely weekend!

Disliked Going home!

Liked The owners were very efficient and informative, they were quite relaxed and easy going.

A brilliant small peaceful site, with basic amenities. Perfect for a getaway if you enjoy the simple things in life. This is a great base camp to explore Dalby forest.

You will need to be prepared with food and other supplies, the location is quite a drive to a local shop.

We enjoyed our stay that much we've booked to go again in Aug.

Local attractions

Start your exploration of Dalby Forest at the visitors’ centre (15 minutes’ drive), where you can get expert advice on the best hiking routes. If you’re into birdwatching, head to the Raptor Viewpoint, where valley views come with sightings of ospreys and sparrowhawks. At National Trust - Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping interesting rock formations date from the Jurassic Age. In Scarborough (half an hour), the 1930s Scarborough North Bay Railway, which goes through Northstead Manor Gardens and along the North Bay, is an effortless way to explore (some of) the town. Stop for an ice cream or fish and chips on either of the two sandy beaches, which are separated by a headland topped by the ruins of Scarborough Castle. Whitby (40 minutes) is renowned for its connection to Bram Stoker, who was inspired to create his character Dracula by the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, on a headland accessed via the 199 Steps. Across the River Esk, the Whalebone Arch overlooks the working harbour and is a great frame for a picture of the abbey.
