  • Peaceful riverbank site on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Scarborough and beaches, 20 minutes from Filey
  • Great spot for anglers, with river fishing on site
Casting about for a peaceful holiday? Hook yourself a spot for a stay at Riverside Caravan Park, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough. Down a quiet country lane, and on the banks of the river Derwent, this is a top site for finding a bit of calm: it's the kind of place where you can listen to the river as it flows by, hear the sounds of the countryside drifting across the fields from neighbouring farms, and maybe nab a patch of riverbank for some fishing. Music fans might gravitate towards the Scarborough Fair Collection, 15 minutes away, while others might prefer visits to the town’s beach, aquarium, Italian gardens, open-air theatre or golf courses. Want to steer clear of the seaside entirely? Turn instead to North York Moors National Park, less than five minutes from base, for hiking and biking trails, scenic towns and villages, and some fab heritage railways. Guests keen on keeping getaways low-key and low-on-travel are well served here. The site’s about half a mile from the village of East Ayton, where basic supplies can be sorted in the small convenience store, hungers can be satisfied in the restaurant or chip shop, and thirsts can be quenched in the pub. East Ayton’s also where those of a more exploratory disposition should go for local buses to the coast. Back on site, there are ladies' and gents' loos, electric showers, and two taps for fresh drinking water.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good location.

Disliked: Basically this site should be shut down! The toilets were blocked on day one and unusable. The staff didn't really care (although we only saw them once). No hot water to wash up. The showers were never cleaned and there were no fire points around. Basically it's just a field and that's it. No facilities. Booking last minute this was the only site with availability, and now I know why! Will never go again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We had a lovely stay at the riverside campsite, especially because of its close location to Scarborough, Filey and Pickering. The campsite was well facilitated with toilets, showers, electric hookup and rubbish disposal. There were about 5 free roaming sheep on the campsite which were fun to spot (although we found them scary at night lol). Toilets and showers were relatively clean for a grass campsite (bits of mud and grass occasionally brought in by campers but couldn’t really be helped). Owners of this campsite were very polite and helpful via text. Thank you for our stay, we hope to visit again :)

Disliked: One problem we had was the toilets would get blocked up fairly regularly but we were not sure what was causing this.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Remote setting, the village was lovely with a warm welcome in the local pub.

Disliked: The slogan on the sign when you approach the campsite reads ‘Riverside, a world away from the everyday’ however, having stayed here for a few nights I think the advertising and images used are very far from reality! We arrived and, immediately were struck at how overgrown and unkempt the pitches were. It really was just an overgrown grass field with a few electric hookups poking out of the overgrown wildflowers and nettles. We had no instructions or details confirming our pitch number and, nobody was available on site when we arrived. However, a quick phone call using the number on pitch up and we were advised to ‘pitch anywhere we like’. After finding a spot, we headed to the facilities- but we couldn’t get in. They were locked due to toilets blocking/ overflowing. A few campers on site said they had reported this (again) and was waiting for a plumber to unblock them! We thought this was unfortunate luck.. until we discovered they were blocked every single day! And, when you can get in, don’t expect them to be clean, and make sure to take your own toilet roll! This is a luxury that you cannot expect at the Riverside. The toilets and showers are knocked together in an old barn. And with 3 toilets (one of them was locked with a sign saying ‘out of order) and 2 showers let’s just hope the site doesn’t get too busy. The ‘washing up facilities’ is an old stainless steel sink attached to the outside of the barn with no hot water and a broken waste pipe! Not really fit for purpose and, if you do rinse your pots under the cold taps provided you can expect to get wet feet! We are frequent campers and know not to expect the Ritz when enjoying the great outdoors. However, I do expect to get what’s advertised and to find that it’s all in good working order/ well maintained and fit for purpose. I’m not sure this site was any of those? The price we paid to stay at this site for two nights, when considering all of the above was quite simply daylight robbery. Stay clear from here and stay elsewhere. We spoke to many disgruntled campers who sadly all felt the same, many in fact simply had enough and went home early. It’s unfortunate really, because it’s a beautiful, rural location with so much potential.. it’s the complete lack of care and maintinence that has led to this review.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: NOTHING about the site other than its location which a 5 minute walk to the village where there is a well stocked Spar, a pub and a coffee shop and Chippy.

Disliked: It’s horrific! The banner on the wall as you drive in says “A WORLD AWAY FROM YOUR EVERYDAY” and it couldn’t have been more accurate as it’s a dump. For someone who’s used campsites for over 20 years this is the worst I’ve seen. The field is simply a grazing field for sheep which wander about while you are there the grass is long aswell with sheep and dog faeces all over the shop. There’s abandoned caravans scattered around the field with a number being smashed up and very unsightly. The ‘facilities’ are where the world away from your every day gets started. Credit to the owners, they’ve made an effort, an awful one albeit, but an effort. They’ve cut a chicken house in half, chucked a load of walling in and put in some toilets and showers. There’s three single toilet rooms with sinks, only two were available on the bank holiday weekend in August though and these had hot water and toilet roll but were both blocked on Saturday morning and ran out of toilet roll very early. The owner once contacted did arrange someone to attend and sort this issue out though so further credit in the bank there. Also in the shed it has three showers, one with a toilet in it (of which the room doesn’t have a lock on the door). The showers were free though but the drains were blocked on numerous occasions. There’s no chairs or benches in the showers and only two very small hooks to use and there were not cleaned all weekend with no mops or squeegees available. There’s no mirrors anywhere either which isn’t helpful or electric points for hair dryers for example. The washing up area is outside and has no hot water. The place doesn’t appear to be manned so there’s no welcome or issuing of pitches. It’s a shambles really so don’t bother booking it.

Local attractions

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching. Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail. A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend. If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.
