  • Peaceful riverbank site on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Scarborough and beaches, 20 minutes from Filey
  • Great spot for anglers, with river fishing on site
Casting about for a peaceful holiday? Hook yourself a spot for a stay at Riverside Caravan Park, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough. Down a quiet country lane, and on the banks of the river Derwent, this is a top site for finding a bit of calm: it's the kind of place where you can listen to the river as it flows by, hear the sounds of the countryside drifting across the fields from neighbouring farms, and maybe nab a patch of riverbank for some fishing. Music fans might gravitate towards the Scarborough Fair Collection, 15 minutes away, while others might prefer visits to the town’s beach, aquarium, Italian gardens, open-air theatre or golf courses. Want to steer clear of the seaside entirely? Turn instead to North York Moors National Park, less than five minutes from base, for hiking and biking trails, scenic towns and villages, and some fab heritage railways. Guests keen on keeping getaways low-key and low-on-travel are well served here. The site’s about half a mile from the village of East Ayton, where basic supplies can be sorted in the small convenience store, hungers can be satisfied in the restaurant or chip shop, and thirsts can be quenched in the pub. East Ayton’s also where those of a more exploratory disposition should go for local buses to the coast. Back on site, there are ladies' and gents' loos, electric showers, and two taps for fresh drinking water.

Liked: We liked it when we finally got pushed out of the field by some friendly poor souls who were also stuck in the mud and we were able to leave after only one night in this disaster they call a campsite (no thanks to the owners of the site!). I would give 0 stars if I could!

Disliked: Where do I start?! Grass pitches are always a risk but I rang the owner of the site before I arrived and asked if it was boggy; to which he replied there's a few areas in the middle but as long as you avoid them you'll be fine. Well... within 2 minutes of arriving and finding ourselves stuck on the edge of the field wheels spinning and going nowhere I tried to phone him and explain how wrong he was BUT surprise surprise he didn't answer the phone! The two phone numbers were not answered the whole time and we did not see any site owners when we arrived or for the whole miserable night/morning we were there. Helpful campers pushed us and about four other stranded cars/motorhomes into a pitch (pitches are a free for all there's no allotted pitches as there's no owners to allocate one on arrival). We slept with the worry of how on earth will we make it out of here tomorrow on our mind, not the best night sleep as you can imagine! The next morning of course we were once again stuck and relying on fellow campers to push us and others out of the field. The only access to the site is through a deep ford too, at least it washed the caked mud off the tyres I guess. DO NOT STAY HERE! Filthy toilets too, caked in mud rarely cleaned. We left one night early. £69 to get stuck in a field twice and no owners to be seen or contacted what a disgrace! Oh. The local farmer can rescue you and pull you out for £20! No wonder the owner doesn't close the site during bad conditions between him and the farmer they are raking it in! Pitch up should not be advertising this site. My photos don't show how bad it actually was because I was so eager to leave I forgot to take photos of the entrance/exit where the land was very poor and people were getting stuck. If the owners cared at all this site could be fantastic for the price of a few ton bags of gravel. Which I'm sure they can afford given the prices they are charging.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The area was brilliant 👏 we loved the friendly 🐑. The young woman who helped.us.

Disliked: Just a shame that the entrance to the 2 fields gets really muddy as there are only entry and exit to the 2 fields through 2 gates. I think that the owner needs to put a couple of tonns of hard core down at the entrances, I can vouch for this as I got stuck at one of the entrances in my motorhome. I need to thanks all the people there who helped me escape the mud. The toilet and shower area are in a large room they were OK but it needs some signage to ask people to leave the shower as they find it, as grass was being walked in and made the area look worse than it actually was. I would come back here but only if there was access for going over the river, but for now use of wellies is OK. Thanks for the staff who helped.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Quiet location. Friendly sheep! Helpful person visited on site. Nice basic campsite, no frills, and suitably cheap

Disliked: Site got easily waterlogged with recent heavy rain and we had to leave early to "escape" across the ford which is the vehicle access to the site

Liked: Location, price. The absolute hero of a local who towed us out when we got stuck in the mud when leaving.

Disliked: Showers/toilets were dirty. Only way off camp was through a ford or footbridge which wasn’t accessible by footpath as it was blocked. Lack of staff. Very wet and boggy after rain.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Can not find anything good to say about this site

Disliked: Having to cross a river to enter site Without being pre warned, nobody from the campsite met us on arrival we had to find the amenities for which at best very dirty ,basic and for the size of site weren't enough . Field was full of sheep droppings, and on leaving we had to get help as like everyone on site we got stuck in the mud ,yet again we got no help from anyone from the site ,we had to pay someone to tow us off which I feel we should be re embursed, we feel.pitch up should research the sites they allow on their website

Local attractions

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching. Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail. A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend. If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.
