  • Family-run park on the cliffs overlooking Runswick Bay beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitby; half an hour to Robin Hood's Bay
  • A short walk to the dog-friendly beach; adjacent to Cleveland Way
A break by the fabulous North Yorkshire coastline is always a good idea – and arguably even better when you manage to steer clear of the crowds and find yourself a quiet little tucked-away spot to stay in instead. That spot could well be Runswick Bay Caravan Park, a peaceful family-owned spot up on the cliffs overlooking the beach at Runswick Bay. Ever-popular Whitby is about 15 minutes’ drive south, so you’ll be able to visit it (and many other coastal hotspots) easily enough, but here it's all about the peace and quiet. Runswick Bay may not be on many visitors’ radar but it’s a lovely little spot with a dog-friendly sandy beach (with rockpools that kids often love) and a village that’s got a pub and café among its cluster of seaside cottages. You can stroll down to the beach in a few minutes from the park – but there’s also plenty of space on site for kids to play in the woods or ride bikes in the open spaces. In fact, everything has been nicely set up for easy family holidays here – the pitches are surrounded by trees to shelter them from coastal breezes, and there’s a good collection of shared facilities including a launderette, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and bathrooms with disabled access. There are lots of lovely walks to be done along this stretch of coastline – but those of you with more challenging hikes in mind may like to note that this park is on the route of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, and on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park.

What customers say

This campsite offers a fantastic location, a short walk from Runswick Bay and on the Cleveland Way. Visitors praise the clean and well-maintained facilities, friendly staff, and spacious pitches. The nearby pub is also a highlight. While most reviews are positive, some mention the steep walk back from the beach, and a few noted issues with shower temperature or occasional wind. Overall, it’s a highly recommended, well-managed site.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly and receptive chap on the front desk. Good sized pitch prevented overcrowding. Convenient location near public houses and the beach.

Disliked Very open site which suffers badly on windy days; planting some protective hedge rows would eventually remedy this and enhance the site aesthetic. When dry, ground is very hard; be sure to bring a mallet and strong tent pegs.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Amazing location, just minutes from the beautiful Runswick Bay beach! Next to a pub and another seaside pub just 2 mins walk (which is the best) plus gorgeous cafe The Tides walkable too.
Super clean wash rooms, plenty of hot water and drinking water stations. And it’s very quiet in the evenings. Staff are really friendly and non-invasive. Easy online bookings - and they often will try to accommodate walk-ins.
There is actually 4G and 5G signal too.
We come with the kids and they always make friends - a very community, social site but the right balance of no children running feral. With the sites closeness to the beach, you can understand why it really doesn’t need any playgrounds.

Disliked Nothing, it’s a superb campsite (and we’re not seasoned campers either!) Perhaps if you have a motor camper you may miss the electric points.

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a good idea here – either along the coast or out into the moors (Falling Foss waterfall, 25 minutes’ drive away, is a good place to aim for). For other fresh-air activities, you could go surfing in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (25 minutes' drive), follow the bike trails through Dalby Forest (45 minutes) or climb into the trees at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes). Whitby (15 minutes) is a must-visit, of course – to walk the 199 Steps, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and follow in Dracula’s footsteps at Whitby Abbey. A little way south, Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour) is also a great place to take a stroll, with fossil hunts and ghost walks as well as National Trust - The Old Coastguard Station to explore. More seaside time? How about a day out in Scarborough (45 minutes), with its Sea Life Centre, open-air theatre and Alpamare UK waterpark? Alternatively, mix up coast and moorland scenery with a heritage ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering.
