  • Family-run park on the cliffs overlooking Runswick Bay beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitby; half an hour to Robin Hood's Bay
  • A short walk to the dog-friendly beach; adjacent to Cleveland Way
A break by the fabulous North Yorkshire coastline is always a good idea – and arguably even better when you manage to steer clear of the crowds and find yourself a quiet little tucked-away spot to stay in instead. That spot could well be Runswick Bay Caravan Park, a peaceful family-owned spot up on the cliffs overlooking the beach at Runswick Bay. Ever-popular Whitby is about 15 minutes’ drive south, so you’ll be able to visit it (and many other coastal hotspots) easily enough, but here it's all about the peace and quiet. Runswick Bay may not be on many visitors’ radar but it’s a lovely little spot with a dog-friendly sandy beach (with rockpools that kids often love) and a village that’s got a pub and café among its cluster of seaside cottages. You can stroll down to the beach in a few minutes from the park – but there’s also plenty of space on site for kids to play in the woods or ride bikes in the open spaces. In fact, everything has been nicely set up for easy family holidays here – the pitches are surrounded by trees to shelter them from coastal breezes, and there’s a good collection of shared facilities including a launderette, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and bathrooms with disabled access. There are lots of lovely walks to be done along this stretch of coastline – but those of you with more challenging hikes in mind may like to note that this park is on the route of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, and on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice pitch wasn’t busy so had a good choice of where to be.

Disliked The facilities were just awful, the bathrooms looked like they had not been cleaned in i don’t know how long, went for a shower and all cubicals had rubbish
on the floor insects/flies all over, and to top it off there was zero hot water. Zero toilet roll in men’s nor ladies. Left asap in the morning so we could use some proper facilities! As a pregnant lady with a 1 year old it just wasn’t fit for our use.

From the manager: Hi,

I'm so sorry about the issues you experienced with us, we have only just opened for the year and our manager and cleaning staff quit without notifying us.

These issues have now been rectified and hope to see you again in the future.

Be prepared for steep walk down to the beach and steps coming back up!

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Close to the bay/beach.
Friendly welcome and info when we arrived.
Clean, warm, accessible shower/ toilet block.
5 min walking distance to local pub, which serves pub food at reasonable prices.
Bay was really good for crabbing.
Flat ground, we used our levellers to get van horizontal.
Drinking water easily accessible from a few points around site.
Other families so our child had someone to play with.
Large site, so not claustrophobic/too close to others.

Disliked Open to the elements - very windy during our stay.
Not very good signal for our phones, which made it tricky to stay in contact with each other.
No electric hookup - not a big problem as we have a leisure battery.

Lovely campsite, ideally placed for us. Clean washroom, toilets.…

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The location is ideal for the Cleveland Way, tucked in a cute little coastal town. Walking distance to many facilities, such as pubs, cafes, the beach and bus stop. The site was easy to find and check-in was easy. The facilities are good, albeit a bit dated.

Disliked It is a very open field, it was exceptionally busy and we had children playing games at our tent door, dogs were off the lead (despite rules stating they must be on the lead), and a man next to us drove his car off-site around 10pm, after we watched him drinking all day, which then made me very nervous for when he returned. I feel camp sites have come a long way over these last few years and this one has been left behind some what. Simple things could make it better, such as planting a few trees/bushes to add shelter from the coastal wind (we nearly slept in our car one night the wind was that bad and some tents got damaged from the wind), as well as helping to add a bit of privacy and make the landscape more attractive. The showers could have a face lift. It would be nice/comforting if staff checked in on the campsite to ensure rules were being followed.

From the manager: Thankyou for taking the time to review us, We are in a stunning location,
We only offer our camp field in July and August as a pop up camping field so it is not officially a campsite, We do however offer full shower/toilet block facilities which are checked and cleaned regularly, it is the summer holidays so can only be expected to be extremely busy,
Shame you won’t visit again, you will miss the stunning Runswick Bay coast line,
Thankyou again Caroline

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a good idea here – either along the coast or out into the moors (Falling Foss waterfall, 25 minutes’ drive away, is a good place to aim for). For other fresh-air activities, you could go surfing in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (25 minutes' drive), follow the bike trails through Dalby Forest (45 minutes) or climb into the trees at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes). Whitby (15 minutes) is a must-visit, of course – to walk the 199 Steps, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and follow in Dracula’s footsteps at Whitby Abbey. A little way south, Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour) is also a great place to take a stroll, with fossil hunts and ghost walks as well as National Trust - The Old Coastguard Station to explore. More seaside time? How about a day out in Scarborough (45 minutes), with its Sea Life Centre, open-air theatre and Alpamare UK waterpark? Alternatively, mix up coast and moorland scenery with a heritage ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering.
