  • Family-run park on the cliffs overlooking Runswick Bay beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitby; half an hour to Robin Hood's Bay
  • A short walk to the dog-friendly beach; adjacent to Cleveland Way
A break by the fabulous North Yorkshire coastline is always a good idea – and arguably even better when you manage to steer clear of the crowds and find yourself a quiet little tucked-away spot to stay in instead. That spot could well be Runswick Bay Caravan Park, a peaceful family-owned spot up on the cliffs overlooking the beach at Runswick Bay. Ever-popular Whitby is about 15 minutes’ drive south, so you’ll be able to visit it (and many other coastal hotspots) easily enough, but here it's all about the peace and quiet. Runswick Bay may not be on many visitors’ radar but it’s a lovely little spot with a dog-friendly sandy beach (with rockpools that kids often love) and a village that’s got a pub and café among its cluster of seaside cottages. You can stroll down to the beach in a few minutes from the park – but there’s also plenty of space on site for kids to play in the woods or ride bikes in the open spaces. In fact, everything has been nicely set up for easy family holidays here – the pitches are surrounded by trees to shelter them from coastal breezes, and there’s a good collection of shared facilities including a launderette, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and bathrooms with disabled access. There are lots of lovely walks to be done along this stretch of coastline – but those of you with more challenging hikes in mind may like to note that this park is on the route of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, and on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site in a great location. It's great that it's right next to the coastal path and the bus stop is a short walk from the campsite. Toilets, showers and washing up area clean and very good (if a little far to walk)

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location next to the Coast Path, a few yards from the local bus stop and pub and at the top of the road leading up from the village and beach. Facilities were clean and well kept. A good base for Coast Path walkers.

Disliked: The site was extremely wet after a long period of heavy rain. The clayey ground was starting to cut up and we were very glad to have all-wheel drive or we might have had a problem getting out of the field at the end of our stay.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The local area

Disliked: Campsite needs attention. I know it’s been wet recently but the pitch was a continuous trickling stream. It needs some work on drainage (hire a machine to puncture holes into the earth as a cheaper option to help with this). The drainage on this pitch was a major problem. The of grass- earth was low and this needs to be addressed as lots of tufts of grass but then too much bare earth between which doesn’t help with water absorption. To the right hand side of the field near the fence live the ground is too gravelly for tents (about a third of our tent pegs have bent as ground is nearly impossible to plug pegs in), so we recommend you make this side camper and only as we had to move from here with our erected tent as we couldn’t pin it down. We don’t mind camping in the rain and our dog loves water and we both work in the outdoor industry so it’s not a bother for us, but the camping field here is inadequate. And for £30 a night pitch fees we felt this was unfair with the conditions of the ground and sheer amount of water flowing through the field and gravelly areas. Would also suggest maybe planting some more trees if you are going to struggle in this way with the weather going forward - as rain is in our future and not going to change much!! We left after one night pretty unsatisfied and won’t be returning to this campsite. Camping has become too expensive in our current world for those looking for cheaper nature based options for holidays. We understand that the world got more expensive but in that case you need to make some improvements to your camping field.

From the manager: Thankyou for taking the time to review our camping field, Unfortunately for everyone that week the weather had been horrendous, which is totally out of our control, It is a camping field but we do offer full shower/toilet/kitchen/laundry facilities, looking forward for next season we are planning a planting scheme, We have just had a glorious weekend of weather and all the campers were completely happy, Hopefully, you do come again and next the sun will shine. Thankyou Caroline

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was in a great location in a lovely seaside village. It was quiet and peaceful. The toilet/shower facilities were decent and clean.

Disliked: We had a coldish shower on the first day and luke warm on the second. Disappointed we had to pay extra for tumble dryers.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your review, apologies if the water not as hot as expected, It is a new boiler system and it is regulated to a certain temperature, you should of notified us asap, and we could of adjusted this, Our washers and dryers are available to the campers for a small charge as i think you would find this on all campsites, Thankyou again Caroline

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Excellent location - just off the field to a pub. Just down the slope to the beach. Immaculate toilet facilities and pot washing. Ice freezer, PAYG washing machines. Very friendly greet, all info given and left to choose pitch - perfect! Straight onto Cleveland way - walkers and dogs paradise

Disliked: Take some strong pegs as the soil is more clay.

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a good idea here – either along the coast or out into the moors (Falling Foss waterfall, 25 minutes’ drive away, is a good place to aim for). For other fresh-air activities, you could go surfing in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (25 minutes' drive), follow the bike trails through Dalby Forest (45 minutes) or climb into the trees at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes). Whitby (15 minutes) is a must-visit, of course – to walk the 199 Steps, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and follow in Dracula’s footsteps at Whitby Abbey. A little way south, Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour) is also a great place to take a stroll, with fossil hunts and ghost walks as well as National Trust - The Old Coastguard Station to explore. More seaside time? How about a day out in Scarborough (45 minutes), with its Sea Life Centre, open-air theatre and Alpamare UK waterpark? Alternatively, mix up coast and moorland scenery with a heritage ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering.
