  • North Yorkshire pop-up site with stunning Fountains Abbey views
  • Ripon 10 minutes’ drive, Brimham Rocks 15 and Harrogate 20 minutes
  • Off-grid grass pitches; playground and family pub five minutes’ drive
When you’re after the simple life in spectacular North Yorkshire surroundings, Abbey Falls Campsite comes up trumps. This no-frills pop-up site for tents and tourers is set right on the edge of gorgeous Nidderdale National Landscape countryside, and if that’s not quite enough, the pitches all overlook the fairytale ruins of Fountains Abbey, a gem of a place destroyed by King Henry VIII in 1539. As this is pretty much wild camping (albeit it wild camping with gorgeous views), facilities are limited to male and female toilets, cold showers and a basic washing-up area – there is no hot water and no electricity on the site. There are dairy cows grazing in adjacent fields, a choice of walks along the River Skell directly from the pitches – good for exercising any canine companions – and a family-friendly pub in the village of Sawley (five minutes’ drive), where there’s also a small park with a playing field. Historic Ripon (10 minutes) offers up an impressive cathedral, a brace of museums and lots of pubs and restaurants; Harrogate (20 minutes) is also a popular dining and shopping hub.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Amazing location next to Fountains Abbey, a National Trust site. Entrance into the Abbey is £18.50 for an adult - the grounds are extensive and there are parts of the grounds you can access for free. Large field so lots of space and dog friendly. It would have been super peaceful unfortunately some guests wanted to play loud music. It was quiet later though and the owners came round to ask them to turn it down which was appreciated. Welcoming owners and a perfect spot to explore the Abbey.

Disliked Cold showers - but it does state that on the listing! Noisy neighbours.

Local attractions

Chances are your first port of call will be the monastic ruins and Jacobean manor house at National Trust-owned Fountains Abbey (15 minutes’ walk to the visitor centre). You can also wander the adjacent Georgian-era Studley Royal Water Garden, with its sculpture trail and fountains, and if you’re keen to explore further on foot, Studley Royal Deer Park (40 minutes) is home to red and fallow deer herds (keep dogs on a lead, please). For a scramble over bizarre rock formations, head for National Trust - Brimham Rocks (15 minutes’ drive). You can also let the kids (and dogs) run off energy in the woodland around the mini-Stonehenge at Druid’s Temple (half an hour) – it’s actually an early-19th-century folly with views over Leighton Reservoir nearby. And when the kids need a rest from history, take them for a day on the rollercoasters at Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (20 minutes). Ripon Cathedral (10 minutes) is open for guided tours and holds frequent live concerts. Stately Harrogate (20 minutes) has upscale shops and restaurants as well as the Turkish Baths, where you can soak in thermal waters and book spa treatments.
