General

  • Family-run riverside site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Minutes from the Coast to Coast Walk and the Pennine Way
  • Angling and walking along the nearby River Swale

Perfect peace, top-notch Yorkshire scenery, and cosy berths in bright, roomy pods: pack a bag and make for Swaleview Park.

This friendly, family-run wildlife haven at the head of the Swale Valley is less than 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Richmond. The River Swale passes right next to the park, making it a popular spot for anglers to stay; walkers hail it too, for leisurely strolls along the river banks into Richmond or bigger ventures up the surrounding hills and dales.

The site's sturdy, timber-framed pods are fully insulated and heated, and come with warm interior lighting and electricity. There’s ample space for two adults and two kids in each, and each pod also comes with its own sheltered terrace for cooking, eating or sitting and soaking up the peace and views of the Swale valley.

The pods are handily placed near to the washrooms, where there are plentiful hot showers and bright clean facilities, and to the washing-up area for pots and pans. If you fancy a break from self catering, there's a wealth of pubs with grub along with cafés, restaurants and takeaways in Richmond.

This is the second time we have visited this site and stayed in a pod. I like this site because it isnt too far from where we live and it is in a lovely spot near Richmond, beside the river. We stayed in pod 1 and there was plenty of room for just me and my 5 year old - anymore than that and I would say it would be a squeeze. There's electric sockets, a light and a heater inside. It is just a short drive to Richmond town and there is plenty to do there - swimming, cinema, pubs, shopping etc so if you need entertainment it isnt far away. On site there is a park and the river for kids to stone throw, splash about etc. The roads on the park are good for bike riding too, nice and smooth. Shower blocks are clean but lots of spiders!

    Disliked:

The site is very near to the main road, the pods especially which means the pod area isnt very private and anyone driving past can see straight into the pod area. I would suggest that something needs putting in in place for privacy. Because of the location there is a lot of road noise. There are also a lot of bugs - not the site's fault - the location obviously attracts a lot of them with the trees etc. The shower block although clean, had a lot of spiders above the doors etc. The ground around the pods also needs a bit of TLC - the rest of the site is very tidy around the caravans and lodges but the grass etc in the pod area seems to be neglected a little bit.

The area where the campsite was situated

    Disliked:

The stoney footpaths could do with having proper tarmac put down because it was very loose under foot. Abit to dark up where the pods are when you are going to the toilet at nite a couple of lights on the fence to lead the way would be better. They said there was WiFi on site but wasn't told the WiFi code.

Friendly staff who were flexible with our later arrival and helpful on giving local information. The pod was close to the entrance and toilet/shower block. Although we were a couple visiting this time, we would come back with our children as the facilities were good for entertaining on site.

Modern, clean pod with lovely veranda.
Great fun playing in the river and sitting on the river bank enjoying the peace and pretty scenery.
Good location- easy drive to either Reeth or Richmond.

    Disliked:

As others have mentioned, the pods are very close to the road, so there is some noise, but not at night so didn’t disturb us.
The ground surrounding the pods is very soft. Not a problem for us as it was dry weather, but I imagine it would soon get very muddy and slippy after heavy rain.

Local attractions

If you're a cyclist who likes a challenge, Swaleview Park lies close to the route of the 2014 Tour de France, while the long distance trails of the Coast to Coast Walk – a 192 mile-long route passing passes through the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park – and the Pennine Way are both minutes from the site.

A number of cracking good walks and bike trails are start or pass through the nearby village of Reeth (10 minutes' drive), where Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, two of the county's most northerly dales join up.

It's the same distance to Richmond, for visits to the Norman castle, the ruins of Easby Abbey and the Green Howards Regimental Museum, nosing round the ancient cobbled market for picnic treats to tuck into by the river or taking in the waterfalls.

Further afield, there's the tiny cathedral city of Ripon (45 minutes), also worth a look for its Workhouse Museum, Prison and Police Museum and the birdwatching opportunities of Quarry Moor Nature Reserve.

If you're feeling peckish after all that wandering, make your way over to the Wensleydale Creamery, also 45 minutes, to learn all about the legendary Yorkshire cheese... and then eat it.
