  • Peaceful, leafy pop-up site with Easby Abbey views in North Yorkshire
  • Yorkshire Dales National Park 10 minutes’ drive; Reeth 20 minutes
  • On the Coast to Coast Walk; restaurants and shops five minutes’ drive
Small, simple and family-run are the watchwords at pop-up Swalefolk Camping. The site is set amid peaceful farming parkland on the immediate outskirts of Richmond – the gateway to the northern dales – in North Yorkshire. Guests can be at the pretty marketplace within a three-minute drive or only a 10- to 15-minute walk. Reception is in a tent in the main camping field, surrounded by mature trees; it has a simple shop selling local produce like chutneys and jams, and renting out stuff you might forget to pack, such as teapots and cafetières. From the site, there are views towards Easby Abbey and the River Swale in the fields beyond. It's family-friendly here, with plenty of space for kids to run around and explore; well-controlled pets are welcome to join in the fun too. No-frills hot showers, washing-up facilities, fresh water, toilets and secure off-road parking are all part of the deal, and there is a 4G signal but no electricity (bring torches for night-time). Fires and barbecues are permitted but only in a firepit (your own or hired) to protect the grass. Swalefolk is run as a low-impact venue, so there’s a strict no-forage policy – however, you can buy firewood and kindling at the shop.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked The site is lovely and Nick is very friendly. We were looking forward to our stay and visiting the centre but Richmond Council decided to close the site after 1 night open. They had allowed it to open earlier in the day but then withdrew permission on the Friday night because of historical issues at the bottom of the field. This was totally out of Nick's hands and we felt heartly sorry for him, having to ask everyone to leave. Wish we could have stayed longer and we will definitely be back when all the official issues are sorted. Thank you Nick and I hope you get everything sorted with the council. Hopefully see you next year.

Disliked Richmond Council.

Local attractions

If you don’t fancy yomping the Coast to Coast Walk (it passes close by the camping field), you can have a leisurely stroll down to Easby Abbey in 15 minutes and then begin the popular Easby Loop circular walk. Surrounded by spectacular North Yorkshire countryside, the lively market town of Richmond (20 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive) offers restaurants, pubs and supermarkets. It also has a castle with views over the River Swale from the keep, and the painstakingly restored Georgian Theatre is open for guided tours by day and shows in the evening. Richmond is also the springboard for exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park (10 minutes’ drive). Take a walk along the Swale from the bustling village of Reeth (20 minutes), or head up Arkengarthdale (40 minutes) and hike to Old Gang Smelting Mill. There are dramatic cascades at Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), and you can follow sections of the Pennine Way from the Tan Hill Inn (40 minutes), the highest pub in the UK. If kids are with you, The Forbidden Corner (half an hour) has a labyrinth of tunnels and follies for them to discover, while Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (35 minutes) has rollercoasters and waterslides for all levels of bravery. Should you hit a rainy day, take everyone to watch a blockbuster film at the Station Cinema (20 minutes).
