General

  • Basic, quiet site at the edge of a village in spectacular countryside
  • Pitch up and wild camp in a rural location
  • Wildlife habitat in scenic Swaledale among alpacas and rabbits

Pitch up and wild camp in a rural location on the edge of a quiet village with only alpacas (and rabbits) for company: if you want to get away from commercial sites then this is the place for you. This wildlife habitat in beautiful Swaledale has very few pitches available due to the nature of the land.

There's a chemical toilet provided in the barn and a fresh field spring (buckets are provided for you to take water to the barn to wash) but as the water is not drinkable, you are advised to bring bottled water for drinking with you. There is good access from the main road, the B6270, making the site an excellent location for walkers or cyclists.

As there are livestock in the field, if you bring a dog it must be kept under control and on a lead.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The water from the spring is not drinkable: you are advised to bring bottled water for drinking with you.

Simple basic and with sheep and rabbits too
All of whom leave you alone btw :-)
Amazing night scene up on the hill of hundreds of rabbits in the dark in strong torch light
A quick informal welcome from Cath and left alone

    Disliked:

Not much really because the simple honesty of the pitch is all you need ...

We had another great stay at hazel brow wild camping. Just like camping used to be when I was little, with the addition of a clean toilet facility. Just two families staying this time (including us), and the chemical toilet was left immaculate for when we used it (perfume seemed to have been used too, so bravo to the other family!). We spent some time swimming in the swale, which was great fun as it had been raining- really cold, shallow, fast running and peat soaked water, so not for non-swimmers and wet suits essential, but great fun. Local pub is an easy walk and the employees remain friendly and helpful. Get a 2500 map and follow the footpaths, don't walk along the road. Pleased to see that the phone box near the village works this year, so easier to call in at home and report safe arrival. We were left to ourselves, got on with our camp and left with no problems. We've been before and, I think, left the owners with the impression that this is what we like, so we got exactly what we asked for: a wild camping experience with no interference from the owners. Fantastic. We'll be back. This campsite does what it says on the tin. It is a wild camp. Take gear appropriate for the changeable dales weather. Have some decent footwear available. We took our own seasoned wood. You need to sort yourself out, so be prepared for that! The local woods are free access, so we had some fun with our hammock this year. If you want to wild swim in the river, follow the sign for crackpot (right turn out of the camping field, left at sign for crackpot and cut through the snicket on the right hand side with of the bridge) and take a decent wet suit (essential). This review is from a 41 year old and a 6 year old. We had a great time.

    Disliked:

As I have said in my previous review, please be aware of the water requirements you may need. Last year I took what I thought was a decent amount (approx 15l for an overnight) and started to run short at the end. It was hot last year and we drank it all down! This year I over compensated (colder and rainy) and, despite a longer stay, now have a shed with leftovers of about 10l of bottled water sitting...ready for next year! There is no tap, so if you're not into filtering/boiling all of your water from the on site spring, you will need to think through where you will get water from. If you have a good expedition filter pump, then you will be fine. If not, bring a decent amount of water.

    Disliked:

There was no indication that the field was intact what we were looking for. It looks just like any other field. We only happend to find it die to asking 3 locals. We initially thought we were trespassing on a random field until the land owners brother approved us. A simple sign on the gate would have saved us a couple of hours of bothering locals and tracking back and forth

From the manager...

Ooops - sorry, sign will go up tomorrow.

It was the wild camping experience we wanted. Basic facilities, solitude and a camp fire. Cath was a great help, she phoned to confirm, and emailed precise instructions to the camp site. She visited to make sure all was OK too. My boys (6 & 9) loved it so much they want to go again ASAP

    Disliked:

The weather, they can't do anything about that though :-) We couldn't get the car on site due to the wet weather so we had to leave it in a lay-by over the road, which was a bit of a worry.

From the manager...

Sorry about the rain and getting the car on the site but at least the waterfall was good! Come again when it's sunny!!
Hope to see you back soon
