  • Well-kept tourer park on the outskirts of Pickering in North Yorkshire
  • Flamingo Land Resort and North Yorks Moors both five minutes’ drive
  • Bar and food truck on site; access to park events throughout the year
Set on the edge of the North Yorks Moors National Park and five minutes’ drive from Pickering, Galtres Retreat is a handy and comfortable touring base for all your Yorkshire adventures. It’s five minutes’ drive from Flamingo Land Resort, 35 minutes from York and – if you fancy a day at the beach – roughly the same to Scarborough and Whitby. Getting about is easy thanks to proximity to the A64, A169 and A170 roads. The park has neatly maintained pitches with electric hook-ups, and all mod cons are covered with spotless shower blocks, fresh water points and a launderette. There’s also a sports bar and catering van on site, or you can head out into the peaceful North Yorkshire countryside to find foodie pubs (there are several within 20 minutes’ drive). If you’re intent on sparking up the barbecue, Pickering is the place to buy essentials for the grill. Being on the doorstep of the North York Moors, you have lots of options for exercising any canine chums or discovering walks and cycle rides. Should you prefer to hang out on site, however, chances are there’ll be something going on there, like the weekly car boot sale, vintage rallies, country fairs or monster truck displays (to name but a few). Suffice to say, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the events list so you don’t miss out on what’s coming up.

Local attractions

There are guaranteed thrills and family fun to be had on the rollercoasters at Flamingo Land Resort (five minutes’ drive), where there’s also a zoo home to rare rhinos and big cats. You can enjoy more family escapades on the zipwires at Go Ape Dalby (15 minutes), or content yourselves with walks and cycle rides through woodland at North Riding Forest Park (20 minutes). The North Yorks Moors National Park (five minutes) is another source of hiking and biking routes; you can also see the untamed moorland scenery from your carriage on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a vintage steam-train service that chugs its way from Pickering to Whitby (35 minutes by car). As well as its Gothic abbey and myths pertaining to Dracula, Whitby offers dolphin-spotting cruises out into the North Sea, shops selling jet jewellery and one of the UK’s best fish and chip shops. Further up the coast is Scarborough (also 35 minutes), where you have the choice of two beaches, kids’ rides at Luna Park and rescue seals to get up close to at Sealife Scarborough.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Good size pitchers.

Disliked Site was opened at least a fortnight too early. Roads were still being built. Amenities block was a building site. Electricity was very intermittent, to the point where it went off and we were told that it may not come back on.
