Sentry Circle Camping: Pitches with views (photo added by manager on 26/09/2022)

General

  • Rural North Yorkshire site over five acres, with great views
  • A 10-minute drive from Northallerton and North York Moors
  • Communal campfire area and fire baskets on site; pub half a mile away

A bit of quiet countryside chilling out or all sorts of North Yorkshire adventures – Sentry Circle Camping, three miles from Northallerton, is a fine spot for either (or a bit of both…)

This rural site has the quite the history behind it – its name comes from the ancient stone circle in one of its fields, and its local village, Brompton, is the agreed location of the Battle of the Standard in 1138 (and also where local militia gathered ahead of the 1303 campaign to retake Scotland). These days it’s a much quieter place, where you shouldn’t find any swords getting in the way of your trip along a footpath to get to its shop and pub half a mile away.

If you’ve come here in search of outdoor activities, you should find plenty of those in the North York Moors (10 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (25 minutes) national parks – or perhaps on the Coast to Coast Walk, which passes a little under two miles away. Golf, horse riding and fishing are all easily accessed nearby too for a change of rural activity.

Back at base, pitches are spread out over five acres of open fields, with plenty of space to run about and play games. Keeping warm later in the day requires a campfire, of course – and you can sort this by either settling down at the communal campfire pit or borrowing individual fire baskets to build your own blaze. Kiln dried logs are available to purchase on site.

There is no wifi on site, meaning that guests can leave their emails behind and focus on kicking back and admiring the view.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including fire baskets, logs are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Fantastic owner, came out, late in the evening, in the middle of winter in his dressing-gown having just got out of the shower so that we could check in. Nothing was a bother for him, very friendly and accommodating.

The owner has a huge depth of local history knowledge that was interesting to hear. The atmosphere he creates is one of welcoming and friendly to all.

The stone circle was interesting to walk to in the morning.

What's not to like. Lovely peaceful setting. Free range to pitch up where you like. Both left alone yet Derek is always just at the end of a buzzer with more firewood for the very effective fire pit. Toilets clean and stocked with loo roll and handwash. No expectation of WiFi but my 5G was good and strong additional juice available from the solar plugin on site. Next time I might check out the lovely shepherd huts. Full marks all round

    Quiet and peaceful site.
Plenty of room to choose own pitch.
    Meditative feel to the campsite

    Disliked:

Only due to the recent poor weather, the grass was too long and hadn't been cut, so walking around feet, legs and clothing got ver wet.

From the manager...

Thanks Angela for your review - it has been very wet hasn't it ,and too wet for the mower . See you again :)

Loved this place. Land owner couldn’t have been more helpful when the first thing I did when I arrived was lock myself out of the car. Peaceful and left in peace. Derek was brilliant throughout our stay. I even saw him jumpstart someone, who presumably had a flat battery. I loved the way he was nonplussed about things. Lovely campfires and chilled weekend. Just one very minor thing and it’s not a criticism. Just grass a little too long and didn’t dry out after heavy rain, which meant footwear/ feet and trousers etc were always wet.
    Will definitely be going back

Local attractions

Aiming for lots of outdoor activities? Osmotherley (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to head for – it’s the starting point for lots of trails in the North York Moors National Park, including the Lyke Wake Walk. For other options, there’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away, or a bit of angling at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes (20 minutes’ drive) or you can ride out of a horse trekking centre (25 minutes).

For more leisurely days, potter around the indie shops in Northallerton (10 minutes), explore the National Trust site at Mount Grace Priory (10 minutes) or head to the stately home Kilpin Hall (20 minutes). The Forbidden Corner (45 minutes) is another fabulous place to visit – the four-acre garden is full of unusual bits and pieces including statues, follies, a huge pyramid and a ‘path to nowhere’.

All of this will probably keep you busy for quite some time, but if you need more ideas, it’s worth noting that it’s only a 25-minute drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park…

Must see

  • Rievaulx Abbey (13.5 miles)
  • Rievaulx Terrace & Temples (NT) (13.7 miles)
  • Easby Abbey (EH) (13.7 miles)
