Stone circle with rural scenery behind

  • Rural North Yorkshire site over five acres, with great views
  • A 10-minute drive from Northallerton and North York Moors
  • Communal campfire area and fire baskets on site; pub half a mile away
A bit of quiet countryside chilling out or all sorts of North Yorkshire adventures – Sentry Circle Camping, three miles from Northallerton, is a fine spot for either (or a bit of both…) This rural site has the quite the history behind it – its name comes from the ancient stone circle in one of its fields, and its local village, Brompton, is the agreed location of the Battle of the Standard in 1138 (and also where local militia gathered ahead of the 1303 campaign to retake Scotland). These days it’s a much quieter place, where you shouldn’t find any swords getting in the way of your trip along a footpath to get to its shop and pub half a mile away. If you’ve come here in search of outdoor activities, you should find plenty of those in the North York Moors (10 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (25 minutes) national parks – or perhaps on the Coast to Coast Walk, which passes a little under two miles away. Golf, horse riding and fishing are all easily accessed nearby too for a change of rural activity. Back at base, pitches are spread out over five acres of open fields, with plenty of space to run about and play games. Keeping warm later in the day requires a campfire, of course – and you can sort this by either settling down at the communal campfire pit or borrowing individual fire baskets to build your own blaze. Kiln dried logs are available to purchase on site. There is no wifi on site, meaning that guests can leave their emails behind and focus on kicking back and admiring the view.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked A spacious site with a wide variety of tents, roof tents, campers, and motorhomes.
Facilities were good, including a small shop with friendly staff, a mobile cafe in the evening and morning, and a (very) late check-out time.
As well as families and groups, there were a few very seasoned motorhomers who were friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable. We enjoyed chatting with some fascinating people during our short stay.
The stone circle at the top of the hill, while relatively new, is beautiful, thoughtfully designed, and creates a wonderful atmosphere. Many of the campers on site made the short walk up the hill to enjoy the views at sunset together.

Disliked The “pitch where you like” policy could be a positive or a negative. The site was quite busy when we arrived, and as a larger motorhome it wasn’t immediately obvious how to manoeuvre round to a suitable spot. Flexibility is much nicer than rigid marked out plots, but relies on everyone using common sense.
Others have mentioned that the site is on a hill. Not a problem or a dislike, just needs a bit of planning. Great views from the top of the site.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely atmosphere friendly staff and a beautiful location. Loved going up the hill to the stone circle and some wonderful views from the top.

Disliked Facilities were clean and in good working order. Would have been good to have more showers.

Would be great if cut up wood and firelighters were available to purchase.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked What a fabulous place 😀!
Loads of space in a gorgeous setting.
Views all around of the beautiful countryside. There is a stunning stone circle at the top of the hill, from which you can see for miles.
Quiet and peaceful.
Easy to get to.
Clean and fairly accessible loos and showers.
Small campsite shop.
Fire pits available.
They also have a couple of Shepherd's Huts, but didn't try those.
Lovely, friendly owners and a really nice, laid back vibe.
Excellent value.
Would have loved to stay longer, but will definitely return.

Disliked Nothing 👍

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked From the minute I pitched, I loved every minute of my stay. So much so, I stayed an extra night. The campers I met were so friendly and staff ever so helpful.

The location is absolutely perfect for myself as it's close enough for a quick break. (I live 20 miles away).

The facilities may be basic, but they are very well maintained.

Disliked The site is on a slope, but wasn't really an issue for myself. Keeping my camp bed level was the only minor problem.

I would have liked the dog owners to keep their pets on a lead, as is requested.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Great view, lots of space, friendly owner.
Loved the stone circle feature.

Disliked Automatic lights in the toilet going off after 3 mins - take a torch
Intermittent shower temp boiling/freezing due to water pressure so avoid busy times.
Looked a bit run down in places, like the saggy marquee, and the wood piles have rubbish dumped on them.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Loved the area. Welcoming site owners. Great toilets and beautiful setting. Great communication from everyone. Will come again.
No WiFi obviously but I had great phone reception the whole time.

Disliked on the weekend I went, there were groups booked in. It wasn’t really what i wanted but it’s okay. It wil be Quiet after 11pm. That’s what sold it to me. I just wanted a night sleep. Which is why I came away. I can deal with people having a laugh and a drink. I work in a pub. I enjoy it. But
The groups weren’t quiet after 11pm. Despite being asked by site owners.
4am they quietened down.

Whilst I know this isn’t the fault of the site and I don’t think it’s a regular occurrence looking at things. I had hoped that staff would have come out and reminded them again. 4am was excessive. One guy in a van who arrived after me even left around midnight. This happened on the Saturday as well although it wasn’t quite so loud and this time I was prepared and expected it.

That being said. I would come back again but with some friends and family to have a nice social weekend. Not when I just want a nice peaceful time away.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful location, friendly staff

Disliked The quiet period is stated as being 2300hrs. For the three nights (Had booked for 4) the noise went on for hours. Music continued past 2345Hrs. loud voices, shouting and even a drum being banged until early hours. Derek tried to keep ontop of it, but it continued. Sadly, not a restful place. More like a place for those wanting a drink and weed with their mates on a Friday and Saturday night. Each to their own but not for me.

Toilets were basic but clean. The water ran out on Sunday morning , so no shower or toilets able to flush. Definitely needs more toilets. A urinal trough, and single loo is not enough for the amount of campers present for the guys. The lasses, I think they had two loos , plus a disabled one. In total 4. Which when there is around 100 guests isn't sufficient.

Local attractions

Aiming for lots of outdoor activities? Osmotherley (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to head for – it’s the starting point for lots of trails in the North York Moors National Park, including the Lyke Wake Walk. For other options, there’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away, or a bit of angling at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes (20 minutes’ drive) or you can ride out of a horse trekking centre (25 minutes). For more leisurely days, potter around the indie shops in Northallerton (10 minutes), explore the National Trust site at Mount Grace Priory (10 minutes) or head to the stately home Kilpin Hall (20 minutes). The Forbidden Corner (45 minutes) is another fabulous place to visit – the four-acre garden is full of unusual bits and pieces including statues, follies, a huge pyramid and a ‘path to nowhere’. All of this will probably keep you busy for quite some time, but if you need more ideas, it’s worth noting that it’s only a 25-minute drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park…
