  • Rural North Yorkshire site over five acres, with great views
  • A 10-minute drive from Northallerton and North York Moors
  • Communal campfire area and fire baskets on site; pub half a mile away
A bit of quiet countryside chilling out or all sorts of North Yorkshire adventures – Sentry Circle Camping, three miles from Northallerton, is a fine spot for either (or a bit of both…) This rural site has the quite the history behind it – its name comes from the ancient stone circle in one of its fields, and its local village, Brompton, is the agreed location of the Battle of the Standard in 1138 (and also where local militia gathered ahead of the 1303 campaign to retake Scotland). These days it’s a much quieter place, where you shouldn’t find any swords getting in the way of your trip along a footpath to get to its shop and pub half a mile away. If you’ve come here in search of outdoor activities, you should find plenty of those in the North York Moors (10 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (25 minutes) national parks – or perhaps on the Coast to Coast Walk, which passes a little under two miles away. Golf, horse riding and fishing are all easily accessed nearby too for a change of rural activity. Back at base, pitches are spread out over five acres of open fields, with plenty of space to run about and play games. Keeping warm later in the day requires a campfire, of course – and you can sort this by either settling down at the communal campfire pit or borrowing individual fire baskets to build your own blaze. Kiln dried logs are available to purchase on site. There is no wifi on site, meaning that guests can leave their emails behind and focus on kicking back and admiring the view.

What customers say

This is a friendly, relaxed campsite with beautiful views and a unique stone circle. Visitors praise the spacious pitches, helpful and welcoming owners, and good value for money. Basic but clean facilities are provided, including hot showers. While some note road noise and sloping pitches, the overall atmosphere is peaceful and communal, with many recommending it for a back-to-basics camping experience.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Friendly host, nothing was too much trouble. Hot water in showers, chilled atmosphere. Story of the sentry circle stones, log fires. Ladies in the hippie shop, quirky things for sale in the hippie shop. As you can see we loved it. We had a campervan with rooftop tent and was allowed to park where we wanted, no rush to leave, scenic views.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Quite a lot of space to pitch up (there's way more than 10 pitches advertised - if you're looking for a quite campsite, that won't be the one!)

Disliked The loos might look clean, but they're really old and smell horrible (especially in men's). There's mould on the shower curtains which can be replaced easily. I don't know how people are taking shower there (especially in disabled!!) when the light is switched off every 20 sec - you need to get close to the door to turn it on.
The road is close so might be a bit noisy - that depends whether you mind it. It's the first campsite where there was quite a lot of music each night too.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Nice big open field, good views and very relaxed. You were allowed a fire - fire and wood available on site. and although there were big groups of young lads/lasses, they were very respectful and quiet. It was a lovely relaxing stay.

Disliked Although there are toilets I felt they were a bit dingy. Not the worst I’ve seen, but also, for £20 I suppose I can’t complain.

Liked Really friendly people, relaxed check in and there was a solstice event on with fire and stalls, there seemed to be other events happening later in the summer too. The stone circle has a lovely view. Facilities are enough for what you need and they were kept clean all weekend

Disliked If you are camping in the second field don’t make the same mistake as me - look out for the small thistles before pitching or bring an extra ground sheet :)

Local attractions

Aiming for lots of outdoor activities? Osmotherley (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to head for – it’s the starting point for lots of trails in the North York Moors National Park, including the Lyke Wake Walk. For other options, there’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away, or a bit of angling at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes (20 minutes’ drive) or you can ride out of a horse trekking centre (25 minutes). For more leisurely days, potter around the indie shops in Northallerton (10 minutes), explore the National Trust site at Mount Grace Priory (10 minutes) or head to the stately home Kilpin Hall (20 minutes). The Forbidden Corner (45 minutes) is another fabulous place to visit – the four-acre garden is full of unusual bits and pieces including statues, follies, a huge pyramid and a ‘path to nowhere’. All of this will probably keep you busy for quite some time, but if you need more ideas, it’s worth noting that it’s only a 25-minute drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park…
