Otterington Park: Standard pods

General

  • Well-maintained park in the Vale of York
  • Near James Herriot and Brontë country in Thirsk and Haworth
  • Private fishing lake, nature trails and heated amenities block

Set in the Vale of York near the market town of Thirsk (Darrowby in the James Herriot books), Otterington Park is a place to please all creatures great and small.

Grownups can angle for a spot to land several fishy types at the park’s private one-acre fishing lake, while tiddlers can caper along the nature walks laid on exclusively for Otterington Park fry of all sizes. Then try a tramp along the stream or breaking out the hard-boiled eggs in one of the picnic areas: the park covers 25 acres so even solitary types should be able to find a secluded spot to sink down in.

The site has a heated amenities block with ladies’ and gents’ toilets, shower rooms, a bathroom and disabled facilities. There’s also a parent and baby washroom, launderette and a play area for the tadpoles...

What a great site this is. The site looks like its just had an expansion. The toilet and shower block is brand new and very modern and the pitches are huge. Each pitch had its own hook up point and water tap which helps the arms. The reception and on site shop is also a new building with very friendly staff and a well stocked shop. We were given a fob for the barrier when we checked in and this is the first site that hadn't asked for a deposit for the fob.

The site is close to the main NE train line but I'm glad I booked this site as although you can hear the trains we were far enough away and an embankment helped with the noise. Once in our van at night you couldn't really here them.
There is also a fishing lake that we both enjoyed walking around and the water was crystal clear and it was lovely to see some dragonflies flying around.

This is a site we will definitely recommend and will return to.

Great location, very family friendly. Children can ride scooters and bikes there. Little shop at the entrance, great for everyday essentials in reasonable price.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike. The only downside of the stay was the fact that wasps were everywhere the moment food was out on the table. It was so many of them we actually had to eat inside the pot with closed doors. Maybe you can get some products for it in the shop but didn’t think of it at the time.

Always get a warm welcome at this family friendly park. The pitches are some of the biggest you will find. The new block is always spotless. There is a beautiful fishing lake surrounded by a nature walk.
I particularly enjoy the quieter midweek days, perfect for unwinding.

The set out of the new part of the site with every pitch having its own water supply, the kids loved the play park and the walks through the woods to and round the fishing lake

    Disliked:

Although the amenities block is pretty well brand new, there is a separate room for the showers, which is great, but a lot of wasted space in the shower room which could accommodate sinks, but alas you have to go through to the main toilet sinks for a shave and when in there there is no hooks or anywhere to put your top or towel

Was really nice. The nature walk is beautiful and the little lake is as clear as day. The site is brill for all ages with a nice little park my daughter spent all her time in. The people there were pleasant and the staff were brill. Straight to the point and let you know if you do something wrong and I respect that. The surround area is miles of cornfields so if you like cornfields this is your place 😂 thank you to the staff and people, we had a blast!

    Disliked:

Wasps 😂 not the parks fault but my reflexes are better than I though!

A lovely, quaint camping pod with all the facilities you would need. Very spacious for a family of four staying a few days. The washing up and show facilities were very clean and well maintained. No loud noise in the evening and a short walk to the beach and local corner shop.

    Disliked:

No cooling facilities, perhaps a BBQ area would be a desirable option.

Local attractions

Use Otterington Park as a base to explore the Yorkshire moors and dales: local rights of way are a short distance from the park and walking maps are available from reception. Brontë and James Herriot country are both nearby for hikes, cycling or horseback cantering; the James Herriot visitor attraction and museum is in nearby Thirsk.

York and the spa town of Harrogate are easily reachable too, as is Durham, a must-see with its Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle. There are Park and Ride schemes at both Durham and York if you’d rather not take the car.

And no trip to Yorkshire would be complete without a trip to the seaside: scare the kids silly by ghoulishly relating Dracula’s tale to them over fish and chips on the beach at Whitby, then cruise along to coastal fishing villages such as Staithes and Runswick Bay, or arrow along to Robin Hood’s Bay just an hour’s drive from Otterington.

The kids can paddle in the beck at the Falling Foss waterfall before behaving very nicely during a cream tea in the acclaimed tea garden at the waterfall’s top, then get scared silly all over again on the Robin Hood’s Bay ghost walk telling the story of the bay’s smugglers, sailors, myths and folklore (details from the Robin Hood’s Bay visitor centre or Whitby's tourist information centre).
