We stayed here to visit the "Medieval Music in the Dales" festival over a long weekend at Bolton Castle. Less than a mile to walk to the castle and village and less than a mile to the village of Redmire so very convenient for us.

The site is well back from the road so no traffic noise, only the occasional tractor moving around the farm. There are a few pieces for children to play on but laying well back from the road it is a child friendly site but remember that it is a working farm with all that that entails for safety if they wander.

The site itself is flat and the grass is a thick sward which is well maintained so it doesn't turn muddy even with the rain that the area has had all summer. Having said that, don't churn it up by constantly moving your car. An access track runs round the site and you can then park the car next to your tent on the grass. The sites around the outside of the site have electrical hook-ups. As we don't use mains, we took a site in the middle.

There is a well maintained shower/toilet/washing up block which is cleaned every day and has a fridge and freezer for campers use. The owner mentioned that the floor of the showers had a bit of a damp problem over the summer. My own observation is that this is down to the users, not the construction. If you close the shower door properly, don't run the shower with the door open to check the temperature and wipe the door before opening it again, there is no problem. Hot water available at all hours when we came back late. Movement sensor on the internal lights worked well and a permanent light outside for access. Ramp to the block, disabled WC immediately inside the door and looks to be wheelchair accessible throughout.

There is a pub in Redmire which does meals but we didn't get there during our stay. There are no shops in Redmire. The nearest are in Leyburn 5 miles away. Leyburn is a small market town which has banks, supermarket, hardware shops and eating places. Parking is on an honesty basis but spaces can be difficult to find as this is a very popular area.

Our main focus was on Bolton Castle. This is well worth a visit. 14th century castle, partly demolished during the Civil War to remove any military value. The rest is in relatively good condition. It housed a medieval music festival together with instrument makers and craft market so plenty of weather proof rooms and a great hall and displays to visit even when the festival is not there. There is a tea room, toilets and a gift shop. There are also beautiful gardens laid out to visit and when the cloud clears there are panoramic views. You can see why the castle was sited to control the whole valley. Bear in mind it is a castle. There are a lot of steps up circular staircases over 5 floors! If you can make it the view from the battlements is worth the effort.

Within a couple of miles of the site are Aysgarth Falls and Redmire Falls. Both are worth a visit and do need a bit of walking on paths through the woods that are maintained. Some of the views at Aysgarth can be reached in wheelchairs but not the full run.
