  • In the mature parkland of a listed Georgian mansion
  • At the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales
  • Spectacular scenery across local farmland
Welcome to Constable Burton Hall Caravan Park, set in the gorgeous mature parkland of the Grade I-listed Georgian mansion Constable Burton Hall. In a stunning spot behind the walls of its old deer park, it has handsome views across peaceful local farmland. Constable Burton Hall Caravan Park is at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, at the entry to Wensleydale and near the market towns of Leyburn and Middleham medieval village: think cheese, shopping and heaps of history. Both Jervaulx Abbey and Richmond Castle are within six miles, and there’s a Good Pub Guide emporium on the doorstep, the wonderful 18th-century tavern Wyvill Arms (have a Rudgate Ruby Mild over a game of chess and under a summer parasol). This is a seriously serene site in a spot of spectacular scenery, yet close enough to everything for twitchy types who might fancy shopping, hiking, adventure sports or family days out. It’s also an ideal stopover for explorers from the south of England on their way to the Lake District and Scotland.

What customers say

This is a beautifully maintained, clean, and peaceful campsite with spacious pitches and excellent facilities. Visitors frequently praise the exceptionally friendly and helpful staff/owners. While the site is ideal for a relaxing getaway and exploring the local area, some mention a lack of on-site activities for children and that the facilities, though clean, are a little dated. A pub is conveniently located opposite.

Liked Everything! We really enjoyed exploring the area from walks in the Dales to Middleham Castle and Askrigg and Aysgarth waterfalls - there's so much to do and some great tea shops too! A decent sized Co-op nearby was perfect for camping supplies and we enjoyed sitting out in the evenings watching the bats and listening to the owls. The showers and toilets were spotless and there were a good number of them for the size of site, and also good laundry facilities. The owners were cheerful and welcoming. There's a nice dog walk alongside the campsite and this was a great place to watch the bays and where we wrre lucky enough to see the barn owl on two occasions.

Local attractions

Naturally, one should stop off first at Constable Burton Hall Gardens, the woodland and formal patches surrounding 18th-century Palladian mansion Constable Burton Hall. Guided tours are available of the formal and woodland gardens, but for the hall itself, enquire in advance about a guided tour. Elsewhere close by are the market towns of Leyburn and Bedale; make your way to Leyburn on Fridays for market days and to Bedale for cobbled street Tuesday markets, the petting zoo Big Sheep Little Cow Farm and the stop on the 22-mile heritage train ride from Northallerton and Redmire. While at Bedale, there’s a nifty Heritage Trail from the local tourist information centre giving you a taste of the town’s ancient history (Bedale was mentioned in the Domesday Book), and the Thorp Perrow Arboretum is good for green-fingered and animal fans: it’s home to five National Plant Collections and has meerkats, birds of prey and wallabies among other locals. North Yorkshire in general is great for gardens, so also bloomingly recommended is The Forbidden Corner in Tupgill Park, a folly full of tunnels, ‘chambers, follies and surprises’ on a four acre site in the centre of the Yorkshire Dales. Elsewhere gardenly, go for Helmsley Walled Garden at Cleveland Way and Castle Howard in York, and for green spaces and nature reserves we insist on the grassland and meadow Leyburn Old Glebe Nature Reserve via the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which is full of flower and hay meadows. Another must is the Yorkshire Dales National Park – for watersports, adventuring, fishing and climbing… but if that sounds too much, take off to theme park Lightwater Valley near Ripon for peaceful pursuits. And if you have delightful darlings to hand, fab family-friendly options around Leyburn and in North Yorkshire include high ropes at Aerial Extreme and quad biking at Action and Adventure, both in Bedale, or touring the caves at the nearby Stump Cross Caverns. Also have a wander around the medieval village of Middleham, the site of the leading racehorse training centre in the north of England and a pull for race goers from around the world; pick up a souvenir in one of the independent shops or have a look at medieval Middleham Castle, former home of possibly misunderstood monarch Richard 3.
