  • Nearly wild camping in woodland at Little Ouseburn in North Yorkshire
  • Fountains Abbey half an hour’s drive and historic York 40 minutes
  • Peaceful and secluded off-grid pitches; foodie pub five minutes’ drive
Longing for some peace and quiet on your camping holiday? You’ll certainly get that at Ouseburn Woods, a North Yorkshire nearly wild campsite set in woodland and with very little to disturb you at all, apart from birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the trees. This little gem of a place hidden among trees and wildflower meadows is a space for getting back to nature, cooking on an open fire and chilling in the open air. It’s on the outskirts of the pretty village of Little Ouseburn, and is surrounded by countryside criss-crossed with walking and cycling trails. Please just bear in mind that this is nearly wild camping, with amenities restricted to a spotless, well-designed wooden loo. There are no showers on site, and with no electricity and car parking in a designated area away from the pitches, you’re advised to take a reliable torch to find your way around the site after dark. If you should feel like a change of scenery, there are good foodie pubs in the surrounding villages of Great Ouseburn (five minutes’ drive), Marton-cum-Grafton (10 minutes) and Arkendale (15 minutes), while the lively dining scene of Harrogate is only 35 minutes away by car.

Local attractions

History abounds in this gorgeous corner of North Yorkshire. Visit York (40 minutes’ drive) to climb the tower of the Gothic-era minster or walk around the largely medieval city walls. Take a self-guided tour of the peaceful ruins of Fountains Abbey (half an hour), and see great art displays in National Trust-owned Beningbrough Hall (20 minutes). If kids are with you and you need an antidote to all the culture, head for the adrenaline rides at Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (half an hour), watch raptor flying displays at York Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) or visit the zoo at Flamingo Land Resort (50 minutes), which also has a good line in hard-core thrill rides. When you’d prefer to explore the area on foot, there are easy strolls alongside the River Ure from Boroughbridge (10 minutes), and wildflower meadows as well as a rich birdlife at Staveley Nature Reserve (15 minutes). Keen anglers have the choice of three fisheries within 15 minutes’ drive, and you can play golf at Ripon (20 minutes).

Bell tent (two person)

Liked: Lovely secluded area with firepit and seating. Very peaceful and we enjoyed the extra touches of fairy lights on the site and in the tent!

Bell tent (four person)

Liked: The Tent was a good size with plenty of room and well equipped with blankets, pillows, cushions and utensils for cooking. Really appreciated the wood and firefighters too. The site was quiet and peaceful.

Disliked: The ground was quite soggy underfoot, and the toilet was unusual in the fact it seemed to collect wee at the front of it - which made for an unpleasant sitting experience for both adults and children. There was a trampoline to use, which whilst sounds like a great addition, didn’t have the safety netting surround. Unfortunately this resulted in one of our five year olds breaking her arm trying to climb down and a day spent in A&E.

Liked: Like everything about the site was really secluded and although it wasn’t to far away from things felt like you had more than enough space no one camped to close and very private areas

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (three person)

Liked: The scenery was beautiful. Very private setting and felt truly like you were in the wild - your own little world! Whilst also having access to a clean and rustic toilet, as well as water. 10/10 recommend

Disliked: A shower option would be nice, but ruins the wild nature of it all so definitely didn’t dampen the experience

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (three person)

Liked: Nice wild setting, informative host and good walks from the campsite. Also a good fire pit.

Disliked: The wild section where you bring your own tent is quite marshy. We had a nice time and would come back... but probably not after a wet week.
