  • Cosy shepherd’s huts 10 minutes’ drive from Ripon in North Yorkshire
  • Fountains Abbey 15 minutes’ drive and Brimham Rocks 20 minutes
  • Leafy adults-only site set among woodland; pub half an hour’s walk
Thoughtfully designed, comfortable and adults-only shepherd’s huts are what you’ll find at Little Orchard Retreats, set between Harrogate and Ripon in North Yorkshire. These luxurious little boltholes are surrounded by countryside and pubs (some within walking distance) and close to stunning attractions including UNESCO-listed Fountains Abbey (10 minutes’ drive), as well as the spectacular formations at Brimham Rocks (20 minutes). And there’s masses to see on the property too: woodlands, wildlife ponds, flower meadows and a Victorian railway bridge can all be discovered on foot from the huts. If you’d care to explore more of the local area, a bridle path runs through the grounds right to the village of Markington (half an hour’s walk) – with a pub along the way for refuelling. But what of the accommodation? The natty little huts are handcrafted in wood and stylishly laid out inside, with all the basics in a kitchen corner, a breakfast bar and ensuite shower room. Cosy double beds (all linens are provided) and lots of little touches like underfloor heating and a welcome pack of local produce make stays here seem all the more special. Just to round off the experience, barbecues are provided and each hut has its own seating area with woodland views.

Local attractions

Culture abounds in this corner of North Yorkshire. As well as historic Fountains Abbey (15 minutes’ drive) and the water gardens at Studley Royal (20 minutes), there are frequent food festivals or vintage-car rallies at Newby Hall (15 minutes), and guided tours of the ornate mansion designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The teeny-tiny city of Ripon (10 minutes) has a splendid cathedral with Saxon origins to explore, as well as the fascinating Workshop and Police museums; it also has a decent line in pubs, cafés and restaurants. There’s a full programme of horse racing in summer, and you can take boat trips down Ripon Canal. Knaresborough (15 minutes) has pleasant walks along the River Nidd and a medieval castle to check out. For trips further afield, there’s a bus stop right outside the site; the regular number 36 shuttles between Ripon and Leeds; on the way it stops off in Ripley (five minutes), where you can find countryside walks, a historic pub and ice-cream parlours, and Harrogate (15 minutes) for handsome Georgian architecture and the 19th-century Turkish Baths complex.
