General
- Back to basics site by the cycleway from Harrogate to Knaresborough
- Five minutes' walk from an outdoor activity centre; 15 mins from pub
- On the route for cycling's 2019 UCI Road World Championships
Following the Tour de France on telly is a fine way to pass several summer days, but for the full experience you can’t beat getting out there and being in the crowd as the cyclists speed their way past.
Bring on the bikes then for a stay at Bilton Hall Farm Fields, a North Yorkshire site next to the cycleway on the edge of the Nidd Gorge between Harrogate and Knaresborough and a fine place to experience to rush of the road race when the UCI Road World Championships come to the area (22 - 29 September 2019).
This is wild camping at its most straightforward – there are no toilets or showers on site, but there is a water supply, and a pub 15 minutes’ walk away for an alternative method of rehydration. Shops and takeaways are around 20 minutes away on foot, and a swimming pool is five minutes’ drive away.
If there’s a lull in the action, or you’re coming along outside of racing dates, there’s plenty more to keep you occupied in the surrounds. For starters, the site is a five-minute stroll away from an outdoor pursuits centre where you can rock up for laser tag, archery, axe throwing and other activities that require a bit of expert help.
Fishing is 10 minutes’ walk away in the River Nidd, or you might consider taking to two wheels yourself for the ride to Knaresborough or Harrogate town centres (both within 15 minutes’ pedalling).

From the A59 between, turn on to Bilton Hall Drive, opposite Harrogate Golf Club (HG2 7TF). Drive down the road for half a mile and follow the signs into the field site.
Do not follow satnav and approach from Bilton Lane - you will come to a locked gate and have to make a 15-minute detour back to Harrogate Golf Club.
Local attractions
Bikes and/or boots should certainly feature on packing lists for this place, as there’s much within walking/cycling distance. Start with a stroll/cycle to Knaresborough (10 minutes by bike) to visit the castle and the cluster of cave attractions: Mother Shipton’s Cave, the Petrifying Well (petrifying as in turning to stone, not scary…) and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag are all worth a stop.
Those wheels or walking shoes will come in handy again for those making the half-hour drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where many miles of trail unfold in front of folk in search of a good long stretch of the legs.
All this activity makes a fine excuse to stop off in Harrogate (15 minutes by bike) for a top-notch slab of something sweet at Betty’s tea rooms; while in town, check out the Royal Pump Rooms and Valley Gardens before pedalling over to the RHS Harlow Carr gardens (25 minutes) – which just happens to have another outpost of Betty’s for refuelling in.

- Fountains Abbey (8.1 miles)
- Harewood House (8.3 miles)
