  • Peaceful site with dales views and five minutes’ walk from Grassington
  • Kilnsey Crag 10 minutes’ drive; Skipton and Bolton Abbey 20 minutes
  • Off-grid grass pitches; shops, pubs and eateries five minutes’ walk
Where better to be on a summer holiday than high on a dale-side in North Yorkshire? Grass Wood Lane Site is an exceptionally peaceful site five minutes’ walk from Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s family-run for families, with pitches in a well-kept field with far-reaching views over valleys and rocky crags. The site offers easy access for larger vehicles off Grass Wood Lane. There are portable loos but for everything else you’ll need to be self-sufficient – that means no hot shower and no electricity. However the bracing fresh air and those spectacular views more than compensate for any shortfall in amenities. As well as being the nerve centre of the national park and host to three pubs – a pint of Yorkshire ale is never far away – numerous cafés and restaurants, gift shops and a small supermarket, gorgeous Grassington is the filming location for ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ – you may even bump into James Herriot when the next series is filmed The Dales Way and Grass Wood Nature Reserve are close by for walkers, and the dales offer up some of the best cycling in the country.

What customers say

This is a basic, peaceful campsite with beautiful views, just a short walk from Grassington village and local walks. The site is clean, and the owner is friendly and communicative. The single portaloo is generally kept clean and stocked, although some guests suggested more toilets and a water tap would be beneficial. A small number of reviews mentioned the site being used as a car park during the day, though this appears to be infrequent. Pricing was considered by some to be slightly high for the limited facilities, but overall, guests found it a great spot for short stays.

Liked Great pop up site, very well maintained, clean portaloo checked several times a day. Location only a few minutes from Grassington centre so ideal for all village facilities.
This is a basic site in terms of facilities, but it does that very well. Self check in and out, owner checks the site frequently to make sure guests have what they need.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked The views were beautiful and it’s only a short walk into Grassington so for us it was a perfect balance of being in the countryside with amazing walks and scenery but also having really nice pubs, restaurants and shops nearby, the field was well kept and had a portaloo which was clean. It genuinely is up there as one of our favourite places that we have stayed in our campervan

Liked Beautiful views and very convenient for Grassington. Good communication and easy to book. Helpful departure time of 12 noon
It’s really clear from website this is a basic site and absolutely great if you come prepared for this which we did. Portaloo is basic but was always clean

Disliked It is very clear from the website this is a basic site and not a problem at all but it’s quite expensive for this but will be due to location. However drinking water would be helpful.

Local attractions

Walkers can head down to the River Wharfe (five minutes’ stroll) for a popular trail to scenic Linton Falls (10 minutes), and Grass Wood Nature Reserve is also a short walk away. The Dales Way makes its way through Grassington (five minutes' walk), so you can overnight at Grass Wood Lane Site if you’re walking its length. Kilnsey Crag (10 minutes’ drive) is a popular climbing destination. From the pretty village of Malham (half an hour), you can walk to the soaring limestone cliff face at Malham Cove, and a limestone pavement famed for its solitary (and much-photographed) tree. At medieval Bolton Abbey (20 minutes), explore its spectacular ruins, walk on stepping stones across the Wharfe and join seasonal events like welly walks or fun cycle rides. Skipton (also 20 minutes) is known as the ‘Gateway to The Dales’ and is a busy market town with a well-preserved 11th-century castle and barge trips along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It has shops and supermarkets, a large outdoor market on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and an abundance of pubs, cafés and restaurants.
