Grass pitch

  • Off-grid camping on hilly grassland near Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Filey and Cayton Bay; 20 minutes to Bridlington
  • Hillside or level pop-up camping pitches with showers and toilets
Looking for an off-grid adventure staying on a site with magnificent views of the Yorkshire coastline? Quarry Hill Campsite might be the right spot for you – it's set on nine acres of open grassland and hillside, and with many more acres on hand for you to explore. Yes, this family-run site is off grid but it does have a good clutch of facilities, including spotless separate showers and toilet in a hand-built wooden amenities shack (there are emergency sockets in there for charging devices, by the way), as well as a casual snack bar and alfresco bench seating (both weather dependent) by reception. Barbecues are allowed as long as the weather conditions are not too windy or dry. It's worth noting that the ground is not completely flat here, but the tradeoff for that hilly location is some excellent Yorkshire coastline views. From various points around the site, you can see Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, as well as the surfing beach at Cayton Bay. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to share your North Yorkshire camping break here, and they're also allowed on Cayton Bay beach all year round. If you’re walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way and don’t have a car, buses to Bridlington and Filey are a short walk away.

What customers say

This campsite is highly praised for its stunning views, spotlessly clean facilities, and exceptionally friendly and helpful owners. Visitors highlight the excellent arrangements for children, including a play area and games tent, and the on-site cafe receives consistent positive feedback for its delicious food and reasonable prices. While the site offers a peaceful atmosphere and great value, some note that pitches can be sloping and ground can be hard, requiring sturdy pegs. Overall, a highly recommended destination for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked Everything about this site was perfect! Owners went above and beyond to make the stay! So welcoming and friendly, site is one of the cleanest sites we have ever visited, prices were so cheap and food was amazing! We stayed in a bell tent as a family of 5 and would more than recommend! Will deffo be returning! Our kids loved it and did not want to leave they loved the games room and play park and all the acres they could run free in and just be happy being kids. 10/10 stay

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This was our second stay on Quarry Hill Campsite and it’s improved immensely without loosing any of its no-frills charm. Great to have the graded strips for camping on the flat, despite the hillside location and the views are to die for, as were the breakfasts from the food shack, which were perfect and so inexpensive.
Just a great stay which’ll probably warrant a 3rd visit in the future.

Liked Really calm and peaceful campsite, lots for kids to do and dog friendly! The couple that run it are so lovely and welcoming! Always about checking on things and really chatty and friendly! Simple and back to what camping should be like. Views from our pitch were stunning! The pancakes and waffles were amazing!! Thanks for a great stay, our kids can’t wait to visit again!

Non-electric grass campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a very good induction and followed the quad bike up to the pitch. Facilities were clean and tidy. A quiet campsite although the road can become noisy. Not the owners fault though

Disliked Make sure park on the flat part or you slip down your bed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We liked everything..... great location, less than 10 minutes from the beach, lovely and welcoming hosts, the whole site is very, very clean, the pitches are well spaced out, beautiful view, great value for money, the snack bar is out of this world and its worth coming just for the this alone, games room if you fancy trying your hand at pool etc, we were able to take our dog who loved every minute. Thanks so much and can't wait to book again.

Clean and tidy

Disliked The site is on a big hill so not great for getting around and limited level pitching space.
The bins were far away from where we were placed and not many around the site.

From the manager: Hi
Thank you for staying with us and your review, of Quarry Hill Campsite, we do state in our listing and our name that we are on a hillside and sorry that this is wasn’t noted on booking. We have 5 bins around the quarry which are emptied throughout the day we don’t have any to the far left but unfortunately cannot place any there but feel we have adequate refuse bins available. We also have 4 level tent box / camper pitches, and 26 other level pitches on a tier system which give fantastic views of the coastline which we hope you enjoyed. We are glad that you took advantage of the free games on site and hope you have a lovely summer.

Local attractions

Long-distance walkers, this is a clever overnight stop as the site has direct access to the Yorkshire Wolds Way, and there are bracing hikes along the headlands at Flamborough Head (half an hour’s drive). The North York Moors National Park (15 minutes) is also a hub for hiking and cycling, with many, many trails crossing the moorland. If you’re intent on exploring North Yorkshire’s beaches, you’re spoilt for choice. Dog-owners and surfers can make their way to canine-friendly and remote Cayton Bay (10 minutes’ drive), while Bridlington (20 minutes) has amusement arcades and is the departure point for high-speed boat trips along the coastline. Filey (10 minutes) is known for its quiet family-friendly beach as well as a bird garden, and Scarborough (20 minutes) has a sandy swathe backed by a castle and museums. Kids part of your holiday plans? Let them get up close to cuddle the alpacas and ponies at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), or challenge them to races on the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). And if they’re playing up, you could always lose them (temporarily of course) in the seasonal maze at Great Ryedale (15 minutes).
