  • Back to basics farm site surrounded by the East Yorkshire countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Beverley and an hour to York
  • Public footpath running through the site for easy access to walks
To whip out the binoculars for a spot of birdwatching or to pedal your way around country lanes? From East Yorkshire countryside site South Carr Camping either one is possible with the greatest of ease, thanks to a public footpath running right through the site. Within 35 minutes’ drive of Hull and an hour from York, this family-friendly farm site is well-situated for setting out on foot or by bicycle (you choose) into the local landscape. Or perhaps you might want to set your sights on several of the local market towns, including Beverley (and its minster) and Market Weighton, both of which are a quarter of an hour’s drive away. No matter how far you go, a peaceful retreat awaits at this spot in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Perhaps put on your chef’s hat and try out your grilling skills with a barbecue to end the day, or wait for the sun to go down and simply let the starry sky views sink in. The site will take you nicely back to basics, with basic toilets and showers, running water and no electricity. All you need to do is pick a plot among the spacious grassy pitches. When the evening calls for a meal out, there are several restaurants within a short drive or cycle (Chinese, Italian and fish and chips to give plenty of variety). Handily, there are also pubs in Newport (five minutes’ drive) and Hotham (10 minutes’ drive or a 45-minute walk).

Local attractions

Keep on the lookout for wildfowl, dragonflies and other creatures at the nearby North Cave Wetlands (10 minutes’ drive). You’ll likely spot more wildlife on the cycling and hiking route Yorkshire Wolds Way (20 minutes), which will take you past medieval villages and Humber Bridge (depending on how far you go). For more play, William's Den (15 minutes) has indoor and outdoor playgrounds where kids can blow off steam. Just make sure they save some energy to meet the local herd of alpacas residing at Ings Park Alpacas (10 minutes). Fishing fans won't have too far to look either, as there’s the Five Acre Lake (15 minutes) nearby for carp fishing and South Ings Fishery (five minutes) for three more fishing-friendly lakes, stocking carp fish up to 40lbs. Not forgetting the city… Hull (35 minutes) has an aquarium and historic gardens, while the minster in York (an hour) is likely to wow. Perhaps follow the city’s chocolate trail and fudge making history into the historic Shambles too…
