Entrance to the park

  • East Yorkshire caravan park 25 minutes’ drive from historic York
  • Castle Howard 25 minutes’ drive and Flamingo Land Resort 35 minutes
  • Grass and hardstanding pitches at a historic former railway station
It’s not every day that you get to camp up at a former railway station, and certainly not one used during World War II for troop movements. Such is your luck when you book a stay at East Yorkshire’s Fangfoss Old Station Caravan Park, 25 minutes’ drive from historic York and its many attractions. Covering 4.5 acres of prime Yorkshire countryside, the park has grown up around the former platforms and railway station (the latter now a Grade II listed building), with some pitches set along the old railway line (it closed in November 1965) and others in a well-drained field. All have electric hook-ups. The roads surrounding the park are good, and there’s no fiddly manoeuvring to be done to get in through the wide entrance gate. Once on site, a service road gives easy access to all the caravan and tent pitches too, and everywhere is lit up at night for ease of movement. Kids are welcome and they can keep themselves safely occupied at the play area. If you’re bringing dogs, please keep them on leads while on the park and pick up any mess. You can exercise your pets on several quiet rural walks direct from the pitches. Park owners Jo and Simon are constantly on hand to help you out and make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked Some of the regulars were very friendly along with the site manager.
Dog friendly - although if you are not a dog lover I could see it being a problem especially once one starts to bark all on site start.

Disliked On arrival there was no one to meet us so we ended up picking our own spot and pitching the tent.

The site looks very tired and needs some serious TLC. This includes the shower and toilet facilities. Certainly not like the pictures on Pitch Up. Such a shame as we were expecting to see a tidy old platform and a information point about its historical value from WW2.

Lucky for us we were doing a trial for a few nights of our tent with the dogs and kids. Speaking with a couple of other guests who arrived the same day as us they were just as disappointed as ourselves.

Some of the regular campers continued to make noise well after 2300 - again lucky we didn’t have small children with us.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked The park was nice and small, the kids had a tree swing to play on and the locals and their children, who I think live there were so friendly and played with my older kids.
Showers and toilets are on the older side but still very clean. Rocky who showed us around was very helpful.

Disliked One of the locals that lives there was very loud with music and shouting until 2:30am. I understand it was a Saturday night but this was not nice for us who wanted to sleep.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked Nice manager but that did not make up for the unpleasantness of the site/facilities

Disliked Old, run-down, grim facilities. Couldn’t find any drinking water tap. Photos on website are very misleading and nothing like the campsite itself. Definitely would not recommend

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked Actually Leaving.

Disliked State of the site, not welcoming at all in fact looks scruffy. No reception on arrival apart from "Rocky" the warden who stunk of weed. Had to drive around site to get to pebble and weed pitch and the whole top end of the site is like a third world township.
The site looks nothing like the images on Pitchup.
We stayed 3 nights because we had paid in full and everywhere else was full. Would we go again. ... No

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked Open space

Disliked The site is predominately full of owners in run down and awful looking caravans. They was very clicky, rude to campers and had music blasting and I mean blasting till 11:30pm each night. The smell of cannabis was disgusting, starting from 9am in the morning by the owners and they openly smoked it outside all sat gathered together. The guy who runs it Rocky was nice but let his dog poo where it wanted and didn’t pick it up. The showers were clean but dated. Owners dogs barking none stop and wandering round the site which included to our tent door. The amount of stray cats was insane, young kittens so all left breeding albeit keeps rats down but there was ALOT of cats. The play park has seen it’s day but made worse by the lack of grass cutting and strimming leaving wild mushrooms of a variety of colours and thistles growing right where the kids where supposed to be able to enjoy playing.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked - Friendliness of site manager Rocky
- Flexibility in pitch arrangements. No strict rules on where we pitched up.
- Flexibility on duration. You come whenever you want on the day and leave at whatever time on the day you check out. Great when you have children!
- Old school nature of the camp. Reminded us of camping as kids.
- Being able to camp in an old railway station site. Unique and lots of character.
- Basic amenities. Washing up block and toilet / shower block are basic but do the job for outdoor camping. Loads of hot water.
- Friendliness of site owner who came and said hello to us.
- Refurb to site that has gone on over last 12 months. You can see the potential for this site due to the architectural interest.
- Lovely dog walk down the old train line. We caught grasshoppers, saw birds of prey and a host of wildlife.
- Dog friendly.
- Our little girl loved the makeshift swing in the tree.

Disliked - The site is clearly aimed for seasonal pitch holders rather than occasional. This was our first time camping and we came local to test the tent out. Seasonal camping isn't something we are familiar with and there is clearly a wonderful community that enjoy coming back to this site year after year and are good friends. This unfortunately has led to some poorly kept pitches, some which aesthetically are in need of renovation. It took away from the beauty of the site, however we recognised that these patrons are the main purpose of the business model, whereas we were only there for one night.

- Some seasonal residents gathered on the Saturday night playing music loudly until 10pm when they kindly turned it down at my request and turned it off at 10 30, but there was a lot of laughing and loud voices that went on until 3am in the morning. Again, we recognised we are not the target clientele but it meant our little girl (age 5) couldn't get to sleep till 5am and we were regularly woken by shouting and laughing which led to a poor night's sleep in what we thought would be a silent night away from the city. Hate being a killjoy but it didn't sell the peace and tranquility we thought we would get from the site.

We can confirm ladies toilets are a bit whiffy in the morning but are very clean. The site manager explained there is a plan to move the cess pit. It didn't bother us as it's all part of the experience but might be off putting for some people.

Liked Nice and quiet little site, Rocky the warden was friendly and helped me push my caravan onto the pitch. Let me know where everything was, toilets, waste water etc. Would definitely go back.

Local attractions

The beguiling city of York (25 minutes’ drive) beckons with its landmark Gothic-era Minster (climb the tower for spectacular views over city rooftops), medieval dioramas at Jorvik Viking Centre and walks around the city walls. You can also take scenic cruises down the River Ouse, hang out in historic waterside pubs or frighten the whole family on guided ghost walks after dark. Cultural types among you might marvel at the sumptuous rooms and priceless antiques at Castle Howard (25 minutes), where you can also breathe in clean Yorkshire air as you explore the 18th-century follies and monuments that dot the surrounding parkland. Fans of war history could make a beeline for the World War II aircraft and armoured tanks on display at Eden Camp Modern History Museum (half an hour). Kids will probably fret until they’ve spent a day on rollercoasters or spotted big cats at Flamingo Land Resort (35 minutes); if they’re not behaving well, threaten to lose them – and find them again of course – in the corn labyrinth at York Maze (15 minutes, seasonal).
