  • Bridlington 40 minutes’ drive, and RSPB Bempton Cliffs 55 minutes
  • Dog-friendly lodges with high-end interiors and private hot tubs
Stylish accommodation and the total peace of the East Riding of Yorkshire countryside. If that sounds like an irresistible combination, you’d better get yourselves booked in at North Star Sanctum, a small holiday park 25 minutes’ drive from Hull and with a handful of luxurious lodges sleeping up to five guests. The interiors of these contemporary boltholes are kitted out to an exceptionally high spec, with top-quality, well-equipped kitchens and open-plan living/dining spaces kept toasty by woodburners. Gorgeous bed linens are supplied in bedrooms with plenty of storage and bedside lighting, and stunning ensuite bathrooms all have exotic designs inspired by the site owners’ travels around the world. Outside each bijou lodge is an exclusive-use hot tub; there’s no better place to chill with a bottle of bubbly – and with little light pollution in these parts, wait for a clear night and you can add the dancing constellations in the sky to your hedonistic soak. The site is completely dog-friendly, and there are plenty of beaches and pubs that welcome your pets to be found locally.

Local attractions

When family days at the seaside come calling, pack the bucket and space and head for Bridlington (40 minutes’ drive) to build sandcastles on the sandy beach or take a boat trip around the bay. Visit RSPB Bempton Cliffs (55 minutes) to see puffins and gannets nesting in their thousands, or stop off at Fraisthorpe Beach (40 minutes) to blow away the cobwebs as you walk any canine chums. Turning inland, Beverley (35 minutes) has an ornate minster with two soaring Gothic spires, and there are Renoir portraits in the outstanding art collection at Elizabethan-era Burton Agnes Hall (40 minutes), where you can also explore formal walled gardens. If you fancy having a potter around the historic centre of Hull (25 minutes), be sure to check out the 1940s dioramas at the Streetlife Museum and the haunting slavery exhibitions at Wilberforce House. If the kids have had their fill of culture, take them to admire the sharks at The Deep aquarium (also 25 minutes), or eat a picnic lakeside in Pickering Park (half an hour) on warmer days.
