  • Quiet Yorkshire Wolds caravan site just outside Burton Fleming
  • A 15-minute drive from the beaches at Filey and Bridlington
  • On a working poultry farm; family- and dog-friendly
Life’s a beach is the saying… and beaches may very well feature in a merry itinerary from this East Yorkshire site, as West Hale Gate Caravan Site is 15 minutes’ drive away from the coast. The dog-friendly site is a real rural retreat, part of a working poultry farm and surrounded by the countryside. A little downtime goes a long way, so this site is quiet and spacious so that you can get a quality rest. Guests have access to bathroom cabins, each with a shower, toilet and basin so that you’ll have somewhere to freshen up a little before the day – the site is close to the North Yorkshire border, so there’s much to do whichever direction you go. The farm is half a mile out from the rather scenic village of Burton Fleming and its post office and small shop. Rudston, another village five minutes’ drive away, has a popular foodie spot in the form of a community pub – you may want to pedal there over the particularly splendid (and flat-ish) bike ride before settling in for a meal.

Liked: Peaceful, quiet site with good views. The toilet/shower facilities were spotlessly clean and as individual units felt very private.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely view, looking out across fields with a small herd of cows in the next field. It’s a small quiet site, the grass is kept low with wide firebreak areas between pitches of longer grass. It felt we had lots of space. You are just left alone to get on with it which has pros and cons- It was great to be able to just pick our pitch, but as we arrived a bit early we were unsure of the process as there is no reception area. Also for campervans, they would need to leave something to mark the pitch when going out for the day I guess, or run the risk of someone else pitching in their spot. There are 3 small shepherd huts on site that each have shower toilet and sink, nice unlimited hot water too! This is a lovely location to visit Bridlington, Scarborough, Filey, Robin Hood Bay etc. Whitby, the North York Moors and York are all about an hours drive. There is nothing in the village though, the pub has closed down and the nearest corner shop is about 10 mins drive away. It was very windy during our stay and we were unable to use our porch awning or to have a BBQ or cook or sit outside, which was a shame because of the great view. Nothing that can be done about the weather of course but as the site is quite exposed I suspect it might always seem a bit windy and for that reason we probably won’t return.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such or an issue for us- but something for others to bear in mind. We booked this through Pitch Up as an adult only site but it was not. Many of the other pitches had children.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Loved this site, able to choose own pitch and each pitch was divided by wild grass and wild flowers. The showers were brilliant really clean, hot and powerful. The children were free to play out with no worry of them getting out. Jess the new owner was really friendly and gave advice on where to visit and spoke of new plans for site next year . I would definetly recomend this site to stay at even give the glamping pods a go as they are really luxurious each with its own hot tub brilliant

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice clean tidy site. Particularly liked the way the pitches were separated with mowed grass on the pitch and the wild grass between. The toilets and showers were different in that they were in separate little huts but very clean with decent showers.

Local attractions

Sidle down to the seaside… Bridlington (15 minutes’ drive) has sandy beaches where you may dabble in a spot of windsurfing or kitesurfing, followed by a tour around the old town. In Filey (15 minutes), you may laze along the sandy shore or watch the fishing boats go to sea. Then, Scarborough (half an hour), a serious seaside resort, has boat trips, surf schools and a funfair, while in Whitby (an hour), there’s the carcass of an abbey and Dracula legends to discover around the town, as well as another beach. While the coast has a way of reeling you in, you won’t want to miss out on the Yorkshire Wolds Way (15 minutes). It’s a hot rambling spot, thanks to its softly undulating chalk uplands and old villages – and those of you who are keen cyclists are likely to appreciate the sloping landscapes too. Craving the city too? Well, the port of Hull (55 minutes) may be a good stop-off on your walking and cycling endeavours. A little further afield, the medieval city of York (an hour) and the shopping centre in Leeds (an hour and a half) make for some more grand days out.
