  • Glamping pods five minutes’ drive from the Coast to Coast cycle path
  • A five-minute drive from Beamish, the Living Museum of the North
  • Family friendly and well maintained; walk to the pub, shop or bus stop
As tempting as it is just to let your eyes wander over pics of the stunning glamping pods at Alma Meadow Glamping, don’t get carried away for too long. There’s much more you need to know about these well-maintained, family-friendly glamping pods… To start, they're just five minutes’ drive away from the Coast to Coast cycle path, a fabulous trail running through the local (and faraway) countryside. Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, is also five minutes’ drive away. Its reconstructed village, town and farm venues bring life in the northeast between the 1820s and 1950s back to life for visitors. Country pubs are something that go happily hand-in-hand with laidback lodge holidays, and handily there are lots within a short walking or driving distance of the site, including one half an hour’s walk away in High Hold. If you don’t fancy switching on the car engine too often, it's good to know there’s a bus stop on the main road under 10 minutes’ walk away from the lodges. There’s also a small shop and a golf course within five minutes’ walk of the lodges. The word 'pretty' might not quite cut it for the accommodation at Alma Meadow Glamping – these dog-friendly pods are set in stunning countryside and each one has a wooden front balcony where you can soak up the scenery. Inside, each pod has an ensuite bathroom and a mini kitchen, with a TV, bed linen and towels all provided. There’s a play area in the grounds with swings and a slide for the kids’ play times.

Camping pod

Liked: The site is relatively small, very tidy, some distance between the pods. The electric shower was a bonus. I was offered to check out a bit later if needed to if we wanted to. The owners were nice and friendly. Would go back. Free netflix on the TV but you need to provide your own WiFi.

Disliked: The lighting in the pod was too bright. I would suggest a dimmer switch, a lamp or lampshade.

Local attractions

Which city first: Durham or Newcastle upon Tyne? In Durham (15 minutes’ drive), there’s a stunning cathedral, castle and botanic gardens. That’s not to mention the riverside park and cricket grounds in the city and at Durham Cricket (10 minutes) a little closer to the site. In Newcastle upon Tyne (25 minutes), track down remnants of Hadrian’s Wall or preoccupy yourself with ogling over the Newcastle Story exhibit and the 34-metre steampowered ship in the Discovery Museum (half an hour). Over the river, the easily recognisable Sage Gateshead (half an hour), with its steel roof, hosts a number of shows. You don’t come across too many opportunities to have a go at driving a real-life digger in everyday life, so make the most of the activities at Diggerland Durham (15 minutes) while you're in the area. Classic car events take place opposite Car Barn Beamish (10 minutes) throughout the year, so check out the schedule before you arrive to check if there’s anything happening during your visit.
