  • Four-acre Co Durham site close to Coast to Coast cycle route
  • A 10-minute drive from Seaham and 20 minutes from Durham
  • Campfires allowed; kids' pedal go-karts available to borrow
As cracking Co Durham locations go, Sharpley Camping has surely managed to bag one of the finest spots: this spacious rural site is in a particularly nifty location between Durham (20 minutes’ drive) and the seaside at Seaham (10 minutes). In fact, you can even spot the sea from various points around the site, to whet your appetite for coastal outings. So that’s city and coast sorted, but this is a fine spot for fresh-air jaunts into the countryside too: it’s close to lots of local – and the Coast to Coast bike route if you’re feeling more energetic/ambitious. Alternatively, you could simply settle in to soak up the fresh air and fine views on site instead: there should be plenty of space for such things around the four-acre field. Campfires are allowed to keep you warm of an evening, and there’s space for kids to play well away from the flames too (with free go-karts to pedal if they’re after a bit of extra entertainment). Facilities at this laidback site are fairly minimal, but all the basics are covered, including a washing-up area, showers and toilets. There's a pub in the village of Seaton (five minutes' drive) and supermarkets within a similar length of drive.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: Owners not expecting us despite booking several weeks earlier. Dirty shower cubicle with exposed wiring. Bins overflowing with rubbish. Razor left inside shower cubicle. Chemical waste overgrown and almost inaccessible. Poor washing up facilities. Scrap sink unit at side of field. Underpowered electricity kept tripping.

From the manager: We're sorry to hear about this. As it was the end of the season i had overlooked your booking which i can only apologies for. The showers are checked on a regular basis but obviously not sufficiently on this occasion. The washing facilities are at the side of the toilet block with plenty of free running hot water and large sink. You must have missed that. The electricity is rated at 6amps, using high wattage devices will cause to trip. As stated when you arrived, if you had any issues please call me, I live on site and all these issued could have been resolved straight away. The bins were due to be emptied the day you left and being peak season they can get full closer to bin day. I appreciate your feedback and take the comments on board. For people reading this please, if you have any issues or concerns just give me a quick call or text and i can resolve matters, i want everyone to enjoy their stay and you can see from my other feedback.

Liked: Lovely peaceful site in a beautiful area. Had a warm, friendly greeting on arrival. Lots and lots of space. Facilities are as described, basic but clean. The chickens are unbelievably friendly, one of them actually ventured inside our campervan !! Will definitely stay here again. Highly recommended

Bell tent (hot tub)

Liked: Full set up! I have a lot of camping stuff so this place was fantastic, all I had to do was put the kids camping beds in and make up our bed then enjoy, the hot tub, picnic table, fire pit & bbq were perfect, we didn’t use the shower but looked in and it looked great, we never ever go back to somewhere we’ve stayed because we like to explore but we’ll definitely go back here, this place was perfect. We had torrential rain one night, it just added to the camping experience, David dropped wood off for the fire daily and was just on the other end of the phone if needed, perfect stay

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Easy check-in, just a telephone call to David. Massive flat field so advised to park where we liked. Undercover outside dishwash area with plenty of hot water. Clean toilets with loo rolls. The most welcoming shower in a separate hut, nice and clean with lovely piping hot water. A short drive to Seaham. Lovely and quiet setting.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but only having one shower may prove problem when the site is busy.

Local attractions

If you’ve come along with an eye on getting active, there’s plenty to keep you moving nearby: a golf course and fly fishing area are within a five-minute drive, as are a go-kart track and a paintballing centre for those with something a bit more adrenaline-fuelled in mind. For more of a recce of your rural surrounds, take the nippers off to Down At The Farm (five minutes’ drive) for all sorts of animal encounters including pig washing, bunny cuddling and lamb feeding. Wilder beasts can often be spotted flitting about at Rainton Meadows nature reserve (15 minutes). Being so close to the coast you won’t want to miss a stroll around the seaside town of Seaham (10 minutes), taking in its heritage centre and seeking out the World War I tribute sculpture known fondly as Tommy… and then hitting the beach of course. And you won’t want to miss a day trip to Durham either – a 20-minute drive should get you up there to visit the cathedral, castle and botanic gardens and take a ramble by the river. Beamish (the Living Museum of the North) is 25 minutes away if you fancy coming face to face with a bit more history.
