Pitch with picnic table

  • Well-kept Durham touring park 15 minutes’ drive from Bishop Auckland
  • Auckland Palace 15 minutes’ drive; High Force Waterfall half an hour
  • Country views from landscaped pitches; friendly livestock on site
It’s easy to roam wild from Stag Park, a peaceful and well-maintained tourer site in the middle of County Durham countryside, as it’s on the cusp of scenic walks in Hamsterley Forest or Weardale (both 20 minutes’ drive). Half an hour’s drive away, there’s also an unmissable hike along the River Tees leading to High Force Waterfall – the highest falls in England. This little green haven has rural views from all its pitches, which are all fully serviced with electric hook-ups and fresh water, neatly divided up by hedges and provided with their own picnic tables. There’s also a shared picnic area, while showers, toilets and a washing-up area are available at one end of the site. Once you’ve settled in, you’ll probably want to say ‘hi’ to the resident deer, goats and donkeys – the latter are particularly keen to make friends with all guests. There’s a large supermarket in Bishop Auckland (15 minutes’ drive) if you need a stock up of provisions, and a scattering of rural pubs within 20 minutes or so by car if you’d rather dodge the cooking altogether.

What customers say

This immaculately clean and well-maintained campsite offers generously sized, level pitches with water and electric hook-ups, often with picnic benches. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and welcoming hosts, Beth and Justin, and the site's security. The adjacent field with animals is a highlight for many, alongside a well-equipped children's play area. While the portaloo-style toilets and showers are noted as basic and sometimes compact, they are kept spotlessly clean and regularly serviced, with manager replies indicating improvements are being considered. Signposting from the road and grey waste disposal are areas for potential improvement.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Absolute gem of a site. Small but perfectly formed as they say. Stag Park has basic but really well looked after facilities. Justin and Beth have taken previous feedback onboard from others about needing more space in the showers and grey waste disposal needing to be easier. All sorted now. The pitches are a really excellent size and pretty level. Views are great and we love watching the animals. A fob entry system has been introduced making it really secure. Bonus of great free WiFi too. Almost don’t want to give a good review to keep the secret to ourselves! Highly recommended.

Disliked Absolutely nothing ! This place is fabulous.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The greeting on arrival, Beth was very polite and just generally happy to see us which was really lovely.
We had booked to go with friends and asked on the pitch up form to be pitched next to each other or as close as, we were literally next door it was great that they could accommodate that.
The pitch was really well maintained, had a perfect location for water and electric all on the pitch.
Dogs were allowed which was a big plus for us as we have a sausage dog and our friends have a lab.
The toilets, showers and wash area were really clean and every night you'd see Beth or her partner (im assuming sorry) go down to them and just make sure they were clean and looked after. They provided dish soap hand soap and sponges which was a huge plus.
The entire place was gated which made me feel really safe as well.
There was a kids park and tbh it looked in amazing condition.

The only thing is the showers could have done with being a little bigger but other than that it was a perfect stay and absolutely would book again.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Quiet setting, lovely hosts. Facilities basic but spotlessly clean. Nice touches with new pan scrubbers at the sinks. Nice to see the animals close by.

Disliked I would have liked the shower cubicles to be a little bit bigger. It was hard to get re-dressed without getting clothes wet. Not a problem when the weather is nice, which it was for us, but would gave been tricky to keep things clean and dry if it was poor weather.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The small and chilled vibe of the site.
It was absolutely immaculate from the site it’s self to the toilets/showers.
The kids loved the little park, the shop and obviously the animals especially Kieth the donkey.
The owners are really welcoming too.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Our second time here this year for a weekend break. Still in fantastic condition. Site owners have actioned previous feedback from others about lighting in toilets. It’s great now. Rain was biblical while we were here, but we still had a great time on a very peaceful, beautifully kept site. We will definitely be back again. P.S. Keith the donkey was in fine voice this weekend. Really makes us laugh !

Disliked The only thing we think needs sorting is the grey waste disposal. Trying to lift up a full wastemaster is not an easy task.

Electric grass pitch

Liked An enchanting site, perfectly laid out and loved the animal friends next door.
Had a great welcome and shown around the facilities which where great - liked that they were all individual units.

Really liked that it was surrounded with hedges which gave some good wind protection.

Good strong fast WiFi as well

Local attractions

There’s a heap of attractions to keep culture-vultures happy. Raby Castle, Park and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) has splendid medieval rooms to poke around, walled gardens laid out in 18th-century style and a vast adventure playground for the kids. Wildlife lovers can keep a look out for the deer herd in the park too. You can see the remains of bathhouses and garrison dormitories at Binchester Roman Fort ‘Vinovia’ (20 minutes), and if dates coincide, take in the colourful alfresco pageant at Kynren (15 minutes), retelling the history of the north-east region. Open for tours, Auckland Palace (15 minutes) is the lavishly restored residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham and also has an exceptional collection of Spanish Old Master paintings. When it comes to exploring on foot or by bike, Weardale (20 minutes) is criss-crossed with tracks through woodland and along the river, and Hamsterley Forest (20 minutes) is good for gentle family rambles in woodland. To hike up to the dramatic High Force Waterfall, park up at Bowlees (25 minutes) and take the path along the River Tees.
