  • Peaceful retreat for couples, just outside the village of Escomb
  • Within walking distance of Kynren, the 'Epic Tale of England'
  • Barbecues, kitchenettes and outdoor seating on site
Escape to Escomb… The Gables Pod Camping is a petite and peaceful site just outside the little County Durham village, in a top spot for rural breaks. Bring your walking shoes along, for there’s much to explore on foot around these parts – take a walk around Escomb lake, or try to spy kingfishers along the banks of the River Wear river. You may also fancy an energetic ramble around Hamsterley Forest, a hike to High Force waterfall or just making the 10-minute stroll up to the village for pint in the cosy local pub. Lest you should worry you’ll be stuck right out in the sticks here, it’s worth noting that access here is really rather easy: the site is but a couple of miles from the townie amenities of Bishop Auckland (and its handsome castle), and around 20 minutes from the A1. Select a stay here to live in a handmade wooden pod kitted out with its own kitchenette and ensuite bathroom. Each one has a heater to keep things cosy on chillier days, and a barbecue and outdoor seating for when the weather decrees alfresco eating to be a possibility.

Local attractions

If you like a grand building or three, you’re in the right place – there’s a splendid triptych of castles within a half-hour drive of The Gables. Start just up the road at Auckland Castle, a medieval bishops' palace and deer park in Bishop Auckland, then spread your wings a little further to take in the horse-drawn carriage collection at Raby Castle and the gorgeous gorge views from 12th-century Barnard Castle. A strong historical appetite is recommended round here, for there’s also the Bowes Museum, Binchester Roman Fort and the excellent Beamish Open Air Museum to consider. Come along in the summer months for epic evenings at Kynren, a spectacular open-air show tracing 2,000 years of English history. Those who prefer to seek out natural wonders can walk or cycle in Hamsterley Forest, hike to High Force waterfall (both 45 minutes away by car), or go birdwatching 10 minutes away at Low Barns Nature Reserve.
