General

  • Small rural site with wooden pods just outside the village of Escomb
  • Within walking distance of Kynren, the 'Epic Tale of England'
  • Barbecues, kitchenettes, outdoor seating and a hot tub on site

Escape to Escomb… The Gables Pod Camping is a petite and peaceful site just outside the little County Durham village, and a fab place to settle for a bit of rural relaxation.

Bring your walking shoes along, for there’s much to explore on foot around these parts – take a walk around Escomb lake, or spy on kingfishers as you tramp along the banks of the Wear river. You may also fancy an energetic ramble around Hamsterley Forest, a hike to High Force waterfall or just making the 10-minute trot up to the village for a well-earned pint in the cosy local pub.

Lest you should worry you’ll be stuck right out in the sticks here, it’s worth noting that access here is really rather easy: you’re but a couple of miles from the townie amenities of Bishop Auckland (and its handsome castle), and around 20 minutes from the A1.

Select a stay here and you’ll be living in a handmade wooden pod kitted out with its own kitchenette and ensuite bathroom. Each one has a heater to keep things cosy on chillier days, and a barbecue and outdoor seating for when the weather decrees alfresco eating to be a possibility. For the ultimate combo of fresh air and warmth, take yourself over to the the site’s hot tub for a dreamy evening bubbling away as the sun sets (glass of something optional but highly recommended).

Great stay 26/11/2018

Facilities were great everything we needed in the pod. Including tea, coffee, sugar and a pint of milk. The owner has thought of the little things like tea towel, biscuits, bottle opener, hand soap, bath mat, cushions and throws. Excellent having microwave, fridge & kettle too.

She also had a selection of board games you could borrow :)

Well furnished and good idea to have the lamps for more ambient lighting.

The electric fire was good, great idea to have a remote.

Loved the fact the pod had a bathroom, the shower was small but adequate.

Site was lovely nice and quiet, hot tub was an excellent addition and great that it had a large gazebo and fencing around to protect you from the environment outside. We sat in it whilst it was raining - very soothing.

We would definitely visit again. The owner was lovely and helpful, quiet peaceful location, nice local pub for food about 10 mins down the road or a few mins drive.

    Disliked:

My only gripe was the fact the blind behind the bed wasn't black out. All the others on the doors were. I like a nice dark room to sleep in but some people this might not bother.

No wifi but i guess if you come to relax you might enjoy that. We could still get a phone signal and 3G in the area.

From the manager...

It was lovely to meet you both and thank you for your feedback. I’m pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and i wish you lots of luck for your future and hopefully see you again plus your new addition. Xx

Both my 7 year old son and I loved our stay here, we were greeted by Sue, who was very warm and friendly, she gave us a tour around the site and told us about a great play park in the village and about lovely walks round about. We stayed in The Clock Tower cabin, which was a lovely size for us, included a toilet and electric fire as well as coffee, tea and biscuits. The grounds were stunning, beautiful gardens which had clearly been lovingly landscaped and maintained, it felt enchanting and like we were in a secret garden hidden away from the world. Sue was on hand if we needed and was very helpful with everything, she made us feel very welcome and at ease; as though her visitors are old friends. After our visit we went on to a campsite for the reminder of our trip, where we had lots of fun but when I asked which had been my son's favourite, without hesitation, he answered the cabin at The Gables and hopes we will go back again one day!

Local attractions

If you like a grand building or three, you’re in the right place – there’s a splendid triptych of castles within a half-hour drive of The Gables. Start just up the road at Auckland Castle, a medieval bishops' palace and deer park in Bishop Auckland, then spread your wings a little further to take in the horse-drawn carriage collection at Raby Castle and the gorgeous gorge views from 12th-century Barnard Castle.

A strong historical appetite is recommended round here, for there’s also the Bowes Museum, Binchester Roman Fort and the excellent Beamish Open Air Museum to consider. Come along in the summer months for epic evenings at Kynren, a spectacular open-air show tracing 2,000 years of English history.

Those who prefer to seek out natural wonders can walk or cycle in Hamsterley Forest, hike to High Force waterfall (both 45 minutes away by car), or go birdwatching 10 minutes away at Low Barns Nature Reserve.
