  • Off-grid campsite on a working farm in Worcestershire’s Severn Valley
  • West Midlands Safari Park 25 minutes’ drive; Cadbury World 45 minutes
  • Farm shop and coffee shop, fishing lakes and an animal park on site
You’ll certainly never need to worry about food when you stay on the camping field at Top Barn Farm, 15 minutes’ drive from Worcester in the Severn Valley. If you’re big into self-catering and barbecuing, the site owners run a farm shop where you can buy home-reared meats, deli treats and fresh produce – or if you’d rather someone did the cooking for you, there’s also a coffee shop called CoffeeCabin where you can bag barista coffee as well as hot and cold food made on site, including delicious sausage rolls. So that’s the eating issues taken care of. If you’re travelling with kids, chances are they’ll love feeding the resident guinea pigs, goats and hens at the petting zoo, and when more activity is required, you can turn your hand to playing crazy golf or frisbee golf with your offspring. Anglers can head for the brace of fishing lakes, well-stocked with carp and bream, and in season you pretty your tent up with sunflowers from the crop fields. The Severn Way borders the camping field, so keen hikers can soon be yomping alongside the river. On the level camping field, you’re left pretty much to your own devices. The only facility is a toilet block, and there’s no power, so bring torches for after-dark meanders across the pitches.

Local attractions

Walkers and cyclists have no shortage of opportunities; there are way-marked trails in the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive), wild hilly and moorland landscapes to admire in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes), and the Malvern Hills AONB (25 minutes) has routes suitable for all ages and levels of ability. No doubt the kids will be keen to get to West Midlands Safari Park (25 minutes), where you can spend a fun-filled day watching Sumatran tigers in their enclosures, and taking the African Walking Trail to get up (fairly) close to elephants and hippos. Other family-friendly options include an interactive foray into the history of chocolate at Cadbury World (45 minutes) and expeditions to the Black Country Living Museum (50 minutes) to ride on stream engines and vintage red buses. If the steam engines go down well with the family, you could catch the Severn Valley Railway at Kidderminster (half an hour) and chuff through striking Worcestershire countryside to Bridgnorth (50 minutes). Once there, have a wander along the banks of the Severn, and then travel by Victorian funicular up the steep hill for spectacular views back to the river.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Gem of a find. Quiet location, Farm shop, Coffee - Snack Bar, Play area, Crazy Golf, Animals, Park & Fishing lake plus decent toilet. Loads to see & do just a short 0.4M walk down the farm track from the camping site to the amenities. Great Value for money

Disliked: Would have liked to see a map with local walks & attractions. Also only one of the two toilets working & both locked via a secure key but no instructions on how to gain access to these (we found out from another family) Maybe a small shower block?

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely view, very friendly and welcoming owners. There is a play farm/mini golf around 300m walk down a farm track, sadly we didn’t have time to use it on our trip but looks like it would be great for kids. Lovely farm shop by the mini golf. Clean toilet, feels very rural and field with sheep in which kept the toddler entertained. Friendly dog and couple of cats. We had the place to ourselves which was nice!

Disliked: There is a disused marquee and some large metal storage containers at one end of the field which visually weren’t very pleasant to look at for us. One part of the field had quite a few patches of low lying stinging nettles so wasn’t really suitable to park our camper on but other parts were fine.
