  • Well-equipped shepherd’s hut in the apple orchard of a smallholding
  • Worcester 15 minutes’ drive, and Bourton-on-the-Water 55 minutes
  • Kitchenette; private decking for watching wildlife around the site
Explore Worcestershire and beyond by day and then return to The Shepherds Hut at Beechcroft, where traditional meets modern. This cosy retreat is great for couples looking for a bit of romance or solo travellers seeking some 'me time'. Set on a smallholding just off Stonehall Common and 15 minutes’ drive from Worcester, the shepherd’s hut sits in a corner of an orchard, accessed by a gravelled path winding past a veggie patch. Inside is a double bed (bedding, towels and sheepskin rugs from the resident flock are all included), which folds away to double as a two-seater sofa during the day. Two small units with storage, utensils (LPG gas hob, kettle, toaster, microwave, crockery) and sink comprise the kitchen corner, with stools and a fold-up table nearby. Add in an ensuite, mains water and electricity, limited storage, a heater and portable fan – and you have pretty much everything you should need. Outside, there’s a barbecue on the raised decking, from which you have fine views of all that’s happening around you. Foxes, deer, badgers and rabbits may appear at any time of year, while springtime brings apple blossom, new-born lambs and evening jackdaw murmurations. Rise with the lark in summer to catch the dawn chorus, while autumn heralds harvest time and winter sees clear, frosty mornings.

Local attractions

Use The Shepherd’s Hut as your base for explorations of Worcestershire; if you fancy some serious hikes, first stop may well be the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive) to follow sections of Teme Valley Trail, or plod on up to Worcestershire Beacon for views into Wales. Check out a typical Cotswolds AONB village on a stroll past soft-stone cottages edging the River Windrush in pretty Bourton-on-the-Water (55 minutes), or see the area in miniature scale at The Model Village. Feeling flush? There are antiques emporiums and art galleries galore among the old-world pubs of Stow-on-the-Wold (50 minutes). You can try and spot Adam Henson (yes, him off the TV) among the rare-breed sheep and Shire horses at the Cotswold Farm Park (45 minutes), but if you’d prefer an urban day out, Worcester (15 minutes) calls with the ornate hodgepodge of Romanesque/Norman/Gothic-era architecture in its cathedral and colourful displays of priceless porcelain on display in the Museum of Royal Worcester.
