Rockridge: Site sheltered by trees

General

  • Adults-only wild camping with secluded woodland pitches near Worcester
  • A 15-minute drive to Tewkesbury and 25 minutes to the Malvern Hills
  • Art classes and weekly yoga sessions available on site

A wild camping site with no set pitches – just find a corner that suits you and claim it – Worcester’s Rockridge is open to adult guests and their dogs. With frills pretty much non-existent, this spot really does have a back-to-basics vibe to it (no hot water or loos), so you can bed down in total peace and feel the tug of nature calling you.

The farmland is criss-crossed with footpaths that give wonderful views of hilly countryside, so you and your canine chums can have a potter around on site, but don’t forget that all the glorious walking trails in the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive) are yours for the taking too.

The site owner also offers art classes that you can book when you arrive, as well as weekly yoga sessions if your inner mojo needs a bit of a top up.

Please note

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Wild camping feel amongst the trees but small creature comforts to enjoy - hot shower, toilets, cooking/washing up area. Beautiful views from the campsite out over the valley towards Malverns. Local pubs and walks aplenty. Gary was a very friendly host who made us feel very welcome. Firewood on offer to keep the bugs away during the night. We will be back again next year!

It was so easy to park here and camp, what we loved is the choice to pitch up and look out to the beautiful views of the hills or, like we chose to do, go further into the woodland and pitch up there. It felt like true wild camping with the luxury of a toilet and hot shower. Great location and the owner we met as we were leaving was friendly and a great host.

You always get a really warm welcome at Rockridge and being quite remote, it is always easy to get a pitch that makes you feel you really are out in the wilds ( even though only 3 miles to nearest village with shops and a really good pub). The pitches are spread out and you can keep yourself to yourself if that is what is desired. The shower was hot, toilets clean, what more do you need for a spot of off the beaten track camping

Garry is a great host, friendly and welcoming upon arrival. Was able to contact at any time if required. Was left to enjoy the site and evenings as I pleased. Was given use of fire wood logs for free. Shower was hot with good water flow. Toilet was clean. Lovely site, nice area to explore. Recommended to anyone looking for wild camping, with some security and wash facilities. Also on the last night, the local group of deer walked through the camp late at night, with one licking my tent, great experience. Will return in the future

Wild campsite, isolated location, walking paths nearby, very nice forests. I felt in the middle of nature, as it is. Nothing artificial or too manicured.

    Disliked:

I should have packed a bit lighter, I had to park further away from my site than expected. It's OK, I needed the exercise. 😀

I liked everything about this site. The owner is super friendly, a really lovely bloke, he welcomed me warmly and we spent some time chatting before he showed me around. The site is properly wild, with only a few flat spots for tents, but I easily found a spot for my hammock and settled in. I was the only person on the site for most of the evening but was joined later on by another solo traveller, who tucked themselves away in another corner of the woods, I wouldnt have known they were there. It felt like I was in a secret personal haven, full of the sounds of nature...muntjac, owls, cuckoos, pheasants and other smaller birds. The site has a single toilet and sink, which was spotlessly clean and a single shower. There are no site lights (which is a massive positive in my opinion) but does have some shared benches for people to congregrate on, if you wish. If you are looking for a quiet break in nature for some wild camping without the hassle of finding somewhere safe and remote in the wild, this place is for you. 10/10. Ill be a frequent return visitor here, so I hope to share the trees, peace and quiet with others soon.

I had a lovely time. Simple 'wild' camping in a good woodland location where I was able to put up my hammock. Short walk down to the river and OS map shows a number of other walks from the site. Nearby village of Twyning (few mins by car or OS map suggests footpath possible ~ 40 mins) has a well stocked shop and a great pub which does good beer and pub grub.
Nice proper flushing toilet and tap for water - shower built but just awaiting some work form the plumber while I was there ... but not a problem for me.
On top of all that, hosts are absolutely lovely and really friendly and helpful.
A previous reviewer mentioned the train line - just to clarify this is across the other side of the valley - you can hear the odd train in the distance but not loud enough to cause a disturbance.
    I'll be back!
ps. saw deer, bats and plenty of birdlife.

Local attractions

If you’d like a dose of culture on your camping break, Tewkesbury Abbey (15 minutes’ drive) is a smashing place to start. It played a decisive battle in the 15th-century Wars of the Roses and nowadays you can climb the tower for battlefield views, and admire its sparkling stained-glass windows. Afterwards, treat yourself to a crafty pint in one of the town’s half-timbered hostelries.

Mix history up with outdoor strolls around Capability Brown-designed follies and flower beds at the Walled Gardens at Croome Court (15 minutes), while the National Trust-owned The Firs (half an hour) is the birthplace of composer Sir Edward Elgar, and has gardens to wander and displays of original manuscripts including ‘Land of Hope and Glory’.

Fancy a day out in town? Cheltenham (half an hour) offers theatres, stylish shops and a whole host of spas, while the cathedral city of Gloucester has bar-and-shop-lined Victorian quays and docks to explore. And if you prefer to be country based, oh-so-pretty Broadway (both 35 minutes), with its follies, museums and rural walks, is the springboard to explorations of mellow-stone Cotswold villages.
