  • Lakeside wild camping on a nature reserve near Evesham, Worcestershire
  • A 15-minute drive to Broadway, and half an hour to Cotswold Farm Park
  • Limited pitches on a dog-friendly site with fishing and woodland walks
If wild camping at an eco-friendly spot in Worcestershire is what you’re looking for, then a few days on a lakeside pitch at Monk’s View in Evesham is the way to go. When you get there, pick your own pitch and settle down in almost total seclusion on a private nature reserve. Everything is done on site to make your stay as sustainable as possible. Tent numbers are kept low to maintain guest privacy and respect nature. Minimal facilities cause minimal impact on the environment, and the facilities are indeed pretty minimal: a composting loo – but a very fine one made from recycled wood. Just a note of warning here: the site does not have running water or electricity. Bring your own drinking water and a torch for finding your way around after dark. The simplicity of the campsite is one of its biggest attractions: here you can escape the daily grind and relax in peaceful surroundings, fish on the wild lake and spend hours watching the swans float past. Dogs are welcome and there are waterside and woodland walks for exercise (yes, for both canines and humans), and at the end of a chilled day, gather wood among the trees and then gather everyone up around the firepit for a barbecue. Stock up on foodie bits and bobs at the supermarkets in Evesham (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy a change of scenery, there are pubs, bars and takeaways in the town too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location and tranquility. It was a very peaceful and relaxing break. It had a lovely array of animals around the lake.

Disliked: We were fortunate that we had the site to ourselves so we had a lovely few days. However, had there been other campers, I think we would have felt crowded. There are no obvious secluded pitches which I thought was shown in the photos.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely loved our stay here! We only booked the one night but had the space to ourselves and we wished we'd booked for longer! It was so peaceful and we'd certainly come back again. If you're booking to stay, don't forget the insect repellant and a supply of fresh water.

Disliked: Almost got caught out by there being no running water at the site - the lack of drinking water is clear from the check boxes but worth being aware of if, like me, you don't always read the fine print

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: As close to wild camping as we’ve got without actually wild camping. Had the place to ourselves apart from a couple of deer and the swan. Exactly what we wanted. Will definitely return :-)

Disliked: Leaving.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: How peaceful it was. It's just you, your tent and a solo swan that swims around in the beautiful lake all day. Try and get the place to yourself if you can, you will not be disappointed. So much space to bumble around you wont need to leave the campsite. You really feel like you've left the real world behind once you settle in to Monks View. It doesn't come equipped with much but if it's not much you need then this is the perfect place to stay. Will 100% be staying again!

Disliked: You can't park next to pitch.

Local attractions

The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is justly famous for its honey-stone villages, cosy pubs and historic attractions. Start your exploration in Broadway (15 minutes’ drive) and its indie shops and tempting inns, or visit a couple of stately homes: Croome Court and National Trust-owned Snowshill Manor and Garden or Coughton Court are all within 20 minutes’ drive. Right on the edge of the Cotswolds is Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes), the birthplace of Shakespeare. It’s well-worth dropping by to tour Anne Hathaway’s half-timbered cottage, stroll along the river or book a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. There’s lots to keep kids happy too: a visit to Cotswold Farm Park (half an hour) turns up rare-breed animals, or All Things Wild (15 minutes) has an entertaining mix of wild animals and dinosaur trails to discover. Riverside Evesham (10 minutes) has plenty to offer if you hit a rainy day with the family: shops, pubs, bars and a cinema as well as a leisure centre with an indoor pool.
