Hardstanding touring pitch

  • Fully serviced pitches with access to paid fishing lakes
  • Around 30 minutes’ drive from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester
  • Café, wheelchair accessible facilities, parent and baby washroom
Would waking up and walking just a few feet for a spot of fishing be something of a holiday win for you? And how about finding that around 30 minutes by car from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester? At Makins Lakes, in the village of Bramcote and 10 minutes’ drive from the Warwickshire town of Nuneaton, your pitch won’t just be close to a peaceful peg, you’ll also have a long list of Heart of England holiday highlights close by. Of course, the lakes on site aren’t just for the enjoyment of anglers. Being by the water brings a peaceful feel to all the pitches. There are views over the Warwickshire countryside too, but this isn’t a middle-of-nowhere kind of place. Each pitch is hooked up with electric and water access points. The shower and toilet block have accessible areas for disabled guests and there’s also a family-friendly parent and baby washroom. There’s an on-site café and bait shop and if you can’t bear to leave the lakeside, they’ll even deliver food out to you so you need not stop fishing all day. When you’re ready to rest your rod for a bit, it’s a 25-minute drive to catch a bit of culture in Coventry (UK City of Culture 2021) or 40 minutes to Stratford-upon-Avon, the must-see town for all things Shakespeare.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Firstly the roads up to the site and the site entrance are fantastic. Nice feel for security with very nice strong entrance gates. Pitch size was perfect and to have the water tap so close on each pitch was brilliant no long walks to fill up water barrels. Bins and toilet facilities nice a close and to a high standard, clean and tidy.

Disliked Only thing that could have made the stay better would be a later departure time. Getting organised and packed away for 10am woth 3 kids was difficult and a rush.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Plenty of space to pitch up, choose your own pitch, great for kids

Disliked Ground was solid, we broke a mallet trying to put up our tent - then struggled to pull the pegs out when leaving.
Toilets could do with checking more regularly, no hand wash available

Recommend to friends Visit again

Great for large groups with kids, not so good for quieter relaxation

Electric grass pitch

Liked - welcoming staff on arrival
- friendly and helpful staff who suggested our non-EHU friends could pitch their tent on our EHU pitch if their tent fitted.
- lakes are pretty
- location was convenient for us
- toilet block was clean and in good condition
- great pizza truck on Friday night

Disliked - road noise from M69, it runs very close by. It was windy on our stay which will have increased noise carried into the site
- confusing rules on big signs vs actual rules - i.e. “gas BBQs only” - yet the site hire out fire pits, a “dog exercise field” that doesn’t really exist - the ‘sort-of-field’ is a long walk off site, “no dogs allowed around the lakes” - but they are allowed after 6pm.
- pitches on the touring field have no boundaries and people walk through your pitch. Resulting in unsupervised kids running feral and screaming as they run through.
- an EHU issue was reported and not fixed for over 24 hours.
- the relaxed attitude to pitching and lack of boundaries means that there are some very big groups pitching together.
- quiet hours (10pm) not properly observed although the noisy group near us did go quiet at 11pm.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Picturesque setting near lakes

Disliked Cleanliness I.e nappies in shower block floor
Washing up facilities left dirty in a state
No pitch allocation - free for all so spacing between pitches is challenging

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice and easy book, turn up and check in no issues - your left to your own devices which is nice , chilled atmosphere

Disliked Poorly maintained - other than a pitch what are we paying for ? For the effort they put in I’d say it was a poor price , facilities were in very poor condition, left nothing but a squeege to ‘clean’ shower rooms , however there isn’t adequate drainage floors are left in puddles and dirty . They have toilet check sheets there , apparently checked 3 times a day , we arrived Friday just after 4pm …. Toilet check sheet had not been signed by the time we left on Sunday at 11am … which showed as there were no toilet roll in men’s or ladies by Sunday . When I booked there were no electrical hookups available however there were many empty electrical hookup pitches available when walking around . I’d say either lower your price or put more effort in these areas. You can hear cars from road at night too , wasn’t awful but it was there , had 3 toddlers with us and they didn’t seem to like it but slept eventually anyway

Local attractions

If you’re in the mood for a quiet picnic or woodland stroll, Coombe Abbey Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a 500-acre parkland made for whiling away a day outdoors. There’s also a play area, zip lining and climbing forest if the family’s up for an active day. Or you could always try out the angling here too if your break really is all about fishing. Entertaining the kids shouldn’t be too tricky around these parts either. Immerse yourself fully in the medieval world of dungeons, knights and princesses, jousting and falconry with a visit to Warwick Castle (35 minutes). Or scream if you wanna go faster at Drayton Manor Theme Park, home to rollercoasters, Thomas Land and a 15-acre zoo. Animal antics of all kinds are also order of the day at Twycross Zoo (30 minutes).
