General

  • Family-run Warwickshire farm
  • A few miles from Royal Leamington Spa and six from Warwick Castle
  • Licensed farm shop and café on site

Retreat! Retreat! If this is your usual cry when finishing work for the day and/or elbowing fellow commuters on a jammed city train, you'll surely like secreting yourself away in the Warwickshire hills for a spot of glamping at Hilltop Hideaways.

Both the location and the accommodation here are pretty smashing: Hilltop Hideaways is set high up with countryside views for miles around, a few miles from Royal Leamington Spa and close to Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon and the Cotswolds (prepare to snap many shots, for the sunsets are pretty smashing too).

The site has well-kept toilets and showers a short walk from the accommodation, and a licensed café and farm shop serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and evening sups at the bar drinking in the hillside views.

Hilltop Hideaways is a third-generation family farm, so expect to see farm animals as well as a most friendly sheepdog happy to play with those who want it; the welcoming team can also offer farm tours or point glampers in the right direction of the many riverside and countryside walks leading straight from the site.

Please note

Family pod only suitable for up to 2 adults and 2 children aged 16 and under. Adult occupancy cannot exceed this number, with no exceptions made.

Our stay was amazing. The facilities on site were of a very high standard (showers and toilet facilities). Our accomodation was a wooden pod which was warm and welcoming. The staff within the farmshop/cafe were very friendly and were full of useful advice re: places to eat and visit. We stayed for two nights and we enjoyed breakfast on site in the cafe both mornings (again a very high standard :) ). We would highly recommend this site as it is ideal for excursions to Leamington Spa, Warwick and even Stratford Upin Avon (30 min drive).

The bell tents are fantastic, lovely and spacious and comfortable, pleasantly warm even in the rain. The camp beds for the children were fine and the double bed was comfortable, the duvets were lovely and warm for the British 'summer' evenings in the rain.
The children liked seeing the farm animals and being able to go in the field with the ponies.
The site was well equipped with barbecues and a pizza oven and a lovely seating area for campers which was cleverly made with reused pallets and comfy cushions.
The owners were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.

Showers are provided, they were lovely and warm and had a good water flow - it was a novelty showering in a converted horse box. The toilet facilities were spotless as were the showers and they were kept well stocked with shower gel, towels, and toilet rolls. They were well lit with sensors to turn the lights on and off so were always on when they were needed. There was also plenty of water for washing up; a clean and spacious area was provided with a belfast sink and large draining area. All of the water in the shower block was also drinking water so there was no need to buy bottled water in the cafe.

The owners have dogs, we didn't see much of them as the owners kept them in their own space. The small dog (very cute) was out and about a little with the owner but they didn't come near the tents at all - they were very well trained. There is also a lovely sheep dog who was very friendly who played with the children near the cafe outdoor seating area but, again, was very well trained and didn't attempt to go near the cafe seating area.

Take a torch with you for the night time as there is no lighting down to the tents, we were glad of that because you can see the stars well (through the cloud!) and lighting would spoil that.

Finally, the site was clean and tidy; there had been a wedding party there the night before we arrived but you wouldn't know it as the site had been well cleared afterwards. The tents are well spaced out so each group had privacy. The provision of picnic tables outside each tent was useful for dining; each tent had their own which made for a choice of privacy or company as required.

Not being able to take the car to the tent was a big advantage, it meant the site was 100% safe for children and had a more pleasant environment. The car park was very convenient for the tents and was only a short walk but was also out of sight - perfect as who wants to look at a row of cars instead of the view over the hills.

Local attractions

Hilltop Hideaways is remote enough for sitting peaceably watching the sunsets and stars or gazing at the local scenery, but it's a quick drive to many top UK visitor spots for attractions and activities too: Warwick is about 10 minutes' drive away, Stratford-upon-Avon 25 and the Cotswolds within about 30.

By foot, wander down from the site to the River Leam or down the farmland to the village of Hunningham – 17th-century pub the Red Lion is a rightly popular place for visitors and locals – and from here there's an easy four and a half mile circular walk along part of the Millennium Way.

Loads more walks are in the region a mile or two further away, like the three miles from Leamington Spa to Cubbington or the walk around Leamington from the Old Saints Parish Church.

Splendid Warwick is a must for a day trip, not only for its splendid castle but for Warwick Racecourse, concerts at St Mary's and the Bridge House Theatre, and shopping each Saturday at Market Square.

Stratford-upon-Avon also has a racecourse – and, unsurprisingly, many Shakespearean attractions like Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Shakespeare's Birthplace and, also not surprisingly, bardly plays at the RSC and Globe.

In the Cotswolds – at least a couple of days here, please – adventurers have the option of outdoorsy pursuits like hiking part of the 102-mile Cotswold Way and exploring towns like Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Norton and Stroud, or staying under cover at one of the many stately homes and museums: have a look at William Morris's house at Kelmscott Manor, eleventh century Berkeley Castle and looking for the attic ghost at Dr Jenner's House.
