  • Friendly off-grid farm site a mile from the village of Ipstones
  • Alton Towers and Peak District National Park within 20 minutes' drive
  • Meet the animals on site and join in with feeding time
Set up for a stay in the Staffordshire Moorlands at a rural spot that’s also within easy reach of heaps of days out and amenities. Intake Farm is in a great position about half an hour’s drive from the centre of Stoke-on-Trent and 15 minutes from Leek (both handy places for shops and other essentials). It's completely off-grid, so there's no electricity on site. Days out? There’s plenty to choose from, whether you’re aiming to hike your way around the Peak District National Park, scream along the rollercoasters at Alton Towers or take the kids to see the animals at Peak Wildlife Park and Trentham Monkey Forest (or perhaps a bit of all three…) In between such outings you’ll be staying at a small farm where you’ll share the space with horses, cows, sheep, llamas, pigs, hens, ducks and a pet goose – they’re a friendly bunch, and even more so if you manage to join in with feeding time while you’re here. Barbecues and campfires are permitted on site, so come along prepared with the right kit, and pick up the food elements at the small supermarket in Ipstones, a mile away. There are a couple of pubs in the village too if you fancy an evening of dinner and drinks. Please note that this is a calm site with quiet time expected after 10pm.

Wudu Woodland non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Maria and David were fabulous hosts. They got us all involved in feeding, grooming and caring for the animals which was magical for my children (age 12 and 8) who learned so much and their confidence around the animals really grew. We loved the rural setting, the peace, camping next to the cows, the woodlands onsite for the kids to play in. We loved meeting the animals - cows, llamas, sheep (Wanda is a darling), the goats and the naughty kids, the dogs (my daughter misses Zelda already), the horses, chickens and pigs. The facilities are basic but clean and functional. There’s an outside sink for washing up. Running (drinking) water available. I had worried about compositing toilets but there was no smell and they were clean. The showers are basic but blissfully hot!! The site was easy to find.

Disliked: Leaving to come home! We disliked absolutely nothing but If you want perfectly level pitches, parking spaces, flushing toilets and washing up blocks this is not the site for you. If you want a full farm experience and a rural rustic setting then you will love this.

Wudu Woodland non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: What an amazing campsite. We were offered the field or camping in the woods, hard to decide as the field was private, level and all ours on this occasion! The woods were idyllic, there were spaces for tents right there under the trees, hung up was a canopy and under it a place for a bonfire and a circle of tree stumps/log seats and there was even evidence of fairies 🧚 Both were near the off-grid facilities - compost loos, hot showers and wash up area. Beautiful walks leading right past the campsite and if you like geocaches and pubs like us there are plenty in the area (would recommend the Devil's steps walk to the Black Lion and the Steam Railway). Lots of farm animals, a shop (we didn't go in this time) and the converted bus/caravans for hire looked like they'd be fun to stay in. Owner friendly and helpful. Will be back.

Disliked: Nothing (but bring insect repellent, I got a few bites - obviously not campsite's fault 😊)

Local attractions

There are lots of great places to get out for a walk around the Peak District National Park, the edge of which is about 15 minutes’ drive away. If you can’t decide where to start, head to Ashbourne (25 minutes’ drive) to pick up the Tissington Trail for a traffic-free walk or bike ride, or pick up a circular walk in Dovedale (25 minutes) to cross the famous stepping stones. A quiet bit of bird-spotting might take your fancy at RSPB Coombes Valley nature reserve (10 minutes), or if you’re after some more exotic wildlife encounters you could visit the excellent Peak Wildlife Park (10 minutes) or giggle at the antics of the residents of Trentham Monkey Forest (35 minutes). For more of those family-friendly outings, put the rides and other attractions of Alton Towers (20 minutes) on the schedule, splash your way down all the slides at Waterworld water park (half an hour) or opt for something more low key with watersports and a ride on the steam railway at Rudyard Lake (25 minutes).
