  • Stylish adults-only Staffordshire shepherd's huts with gorgeous views
  • Alton Towers and Peak Wildlife Park within a 20-minute drive
  • Ensuite bathroom, kitchenette and gas barbecue for each hut
Perhaps you're planning peaceful wanderings around the Peak District National Park, pottering around the potteries of Stoke-on-Trent or a thrilling theme park day at Alton Towers… or indeed some combination of all of the above? Whichever takes your fancy, you’ll be well placed when staying at Swallow Barn Shepherd's Huts. These stylish Staffordshire shepherd's huts are a little over a mile from the village of Dilhorne, which has a couple of good food pubs for those times when you'd like to eat out. There are several footpaths just outside the field gate for those who'd like to take a walk, although you won't miss out on the scenery if you choose to stay on site as the views are pretty fabulous all around from this hillside spot. And if you do take that option of spending time on site you’ll be able to cook up a meal either indoors or outside – each of the adults-only huts has an outdoor dining area and gas barbecue as well as an indoor kitchenette with microwave, electric frying pan, kettle, toaster and fridge-freezer. Also included in the hut are an ensuite shower room, a double bed and a Smart TV for those cosy nights in. Travelling light? It’s handy to know that lots of handy bits and bobs are provided with stays here, including bed linen, towels, hand soaps, washing-up liquid and all the things you need to make tea and coffee (small bottle of milk included).

Local attractions

This is a highly peaceful place to stay, and you may well need it after an action-packed day out at Alton Towers (20 minutes' drive), where you can spend many an hour trying out all the rides and attractions, including the world’s first 14-loop rollercoaster. If that all sounds like a bit too much, plan a day at the Trentham Estate (20 minutes) instead, strolling around the Italian Gardens, visiting the Monkey Forest and browsing the various shops. Want to see more than monkeys? Pay a visit to Peak Wildlife Park (20 minutes) to see polar bears, wallabies and other exotic beasts. Visitors with an interest in crafts and culture may then want to explore the area's pottery-linked history with visits to the Gladstone Pottery Museum (15 minutes) and World of Wedgwood (20 minutes). Meanwhile, outdoorsy folk should set off for the Peak District National Park and sights like Thor’s Cave or Dovedale (both half an hour).
