  • Family-owned pub site five minutes' drive from Alton Towers
  • 15 minutes' drive from the Peak District; Stoke on Trent 30 minutes
  • Bar, restaurant and large beer garden; dogs welcome
Fill your days zooming about on Alton Towers rides and your evenings sipping pints at Peakstones Inn, a traditional pub in the Staffordshire countryside with more than 400 years of history to its name. This rural spot is but a five-minute drive from the UK's biggest theme park, far enough from the action to get a proper night's sleep but close enough for thrill-seekers who plan on making repeat trips. Set on the edge of the Churnet Valley, Peakstones Inn has several well-placed plots for under-canvas stays on the edge of its spacious beer garden. Those pitching up here have access to basic amenities like toilets inside the pub, where you can also settle in for drinks and food, including full English breakfasts for early birds who are up and about before 9am. Other perks of staying in an old pub include plenty of classic games like darts and pool. Any energetic dogs you've brought have several run-around spots within a three-mile radius, including Dimmingsdale Valley where they can snuffle through forest terrain and the Churnet Valley Cycleway, an accessible route that runs along an old railway line (you might want to keep them on a lead at this latter spot). Prefer urban escapades? Stoke on Trent, a city made up of six historic towns, is half an hour away by road. Hankering for extra snacks? The closest supermarket is a five-minute drive away.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Kind, friendly, great hospitality. Peaceful surroundings. Convenient for Alton towers. Nice ales on offer. Safe space for kids to play.

Disliked: Lack of shower facility. Counter balanced with a visit to splash water park at Alton towers (well worth a visit)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Small site, very close to Alton Towers with good facilities. It is very close to a road but I quite enjoyed the sound of the traffic when going off to sleep. Family of bunnies came to visit in the early hours which was lovely!

Disliked: Pitches are not marked out and we although quiet when we arrived, we were found that other tents quickly arrived which were able to be set up pretty much on top of us. We left after our second night due to the inconsideration and noise from our tent neighbours- not the camp sites fault. Site also not secure and very close to fast main road and given the young age of some of the campers- you may want to reconsider if you have an adventurous toddler/young child with you!

Liked: The pitch was clean and spacious. People who worked there had great manners and very helpful.

Disliked: Pub was very out dated. Didn't realise we was right next to a main road so very loud through the night.

Local attractions

As nearby attractions go, it doesn't get much more local than Alton Towers (five minutes' drive) – in fact, it's said that the Peakstones Inn was once the gatekeeper's lodge of Alton Towers back in the days when the 910-acre park was owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury. Nowadays, as well as the coasters and other headline rides, there's a spa, water park and miniature golf course that cater to those looking for chilled-out times alongside big adrenaline hits. This well-located site is also a mere 15-minute drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park, a hub for epic hill hikes, laidback leg-stretching and everything in between. Drive to Dovedale car park (30 minutes) if you fancy mostly flat walks along country lanes and riverside paths, or take on mighty Mam Tor (an hour) if you're up for a challenge. And don't neglect the fab family-friendly ents on offer in Stoke on Trent (30 minutes) – the city is home (to name but a few) to Trentham Monkey Forest, a wildlife park where apes roam free, Waterworld Tropical Aqua Park and the spectacular Trentham Estate.
