Chase Camping: Tourers welcome

General

  • Back-to-basics Staffordshire farm site in 32 acres of countryside
  • Located in Cannock Chase; a five-minute drive from Rugeley and the A51
  • Pop-up shop selling hot drinks, local produce and camping equipment

For days biking through the forests of Cannock Chase, make tracks for this cycle-friendly farm site in Staffordshire. Stays are wonderfully laidback affairs at Chase Camping – with 32 acres to pitch up in, there's plenty of space for everyone to chill out, cook and wander as they please.

Head here for easy access to some of Staffordshire's top cycle paths (or walks with a well-behaved dog hot on your heels, if you've brought one). The Chase Mountain Bike trail is adjacent to the site, and there's a visitor centre on hand over the road if you need help getting to grips with your surrounds. There's also a Gruffalo-themed nature trail for the tiddlers to totter along here.

Back at base, the views are mighty fine and the basics are all covered: guests can expect spacious pitches, drinking water, portaloos and portashowers, along with a pop-up shop (in high season only). Barbecues are welcome on site as long as they're raised off the ground, but please don't bring any firepits along.

Need to stock up? Rugeley (five minutes' drive) has plenty of food shops, as well as pubs and takeaway options. If you're planning to leave the car at home for this one, this is also where you'll find the nearest station (about a 20-minute bike ride away).

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Never been on a pop up campsite before and was apprehensive but absolutely no need to be. We got there and could pitch anywhere. Room wasn’t limited and was advised to leave 10m between neighbours. It was great that the kids had so much room to play. There was a shop on site that was well stocked and toilets and showers. We camped when there was high winds and the owners and staff were actually walking round during the storm of 50plus mph winds at night re-pegging tents to ensure they were secured. Everyone was really friendly and just across the road to Cannock chase. Brilliant time had by all and will certainly return next year.

Friendly staff, welcoming and helpful. Facilities kept clean throughout the day and good onsite shop with a decent variation of supplies. Grass was level ideal for tents. Pop up wood fired pizza tent available most evenings and it was delicious! We really enjoyed our stay and will be back. A beautiful location on the edge of the forest.

    - Ample space even with our huge 12 man tent.
    - The staff on site were amazing. Polite, courteous and helpful.
    - On site shop was great and well priced.
    - Shower and toilet facilities were basic but functional. Staff kept them clean.
    - 5 minute drive to local supermarkets and shops.
    - Cannock chase across the road for family entertainment.

    Disliked:

The signage from the road could have been clearer as the postcode takes you to a private residence. One sign leading up to the site would have been helpful.

Fancying swinging through the trees? Go Ape is a couple of minutes' walk from site at Birches Valley Forest – head here if you fancy taking on this 1,500-metre-long high ropes course. Segway hire is also available next door for speedy self-powered laps of the woodland.

The National Trust's Shugborough Estate (10 minutes' drive) is also close by: this Georgian manor house has gorgeous grounds and is home to a working farm where the kids can get up close and personal with friendly livestock. For more historic architecture, head down the road to Stafford Castle (20 minutes), where there's an interactive heritage trail and museum to get stuck into.

Other family-friendly options in the area include the National Forest Adventure Farm (20 minutes) with its bouncy soft play zone and go-karting track. Want to ramp up the adrenaline a little more? Jaunts to classic theme parks like Drayton Manor (25 minutes) and Alton Towers (half an hour) can be sorted in a doddle. For some slower times after all that action, Dovedale (45 minutes) is a prime spot for peaceful Peak District wanders.
